The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is seeking a Neighborhood Ecology Corps Coordinator within the Environmental Education Programs & Support Office. This position is directly responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the Neighborhood Ecology Corps (NEC). The Neighborhood Ecology Corps is a program for middle and high school students focused on building environmentally literate citizens with a holistic view of their communities through hands-on experiences. Activities include weekly after school meetings throughout the school year, Field Trips to state and local parks and preserves, eco-restoration activities, community outreach, and more.

This position works an average of 30 hours per week. Schedule will include evening hours (ending at 6:30) Tuesday-Thursday, September-May. Some weekend hours and some holidays may be required. Schedule will vary based on program needs. 


This role works 30 hours per week as a Permanent Part-Time position and contributes to the Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System (LGERS) at a 6% employee contribution in addition to eligibility for 401k/457 retirement plans and medical benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, and delivers NEC programming, including weekly activities, field trips/expeditions, week-long day camp in August, and evaluations.
  • Develops and regularly updates a comprehensive curriculum of programs for each program cohort.
  • Develops and maintains relationships, coordinating and collaborating with colleagues in mission-related organizations, colleagues throughout the department, citizens, professionals in related fields, and program participants and families.
  • Assists the Program Manager in training, supervising, and scheduling part-time staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Assists with administrative record keeping, data collection, grant reports, transportation coordination for off-site programming, etc.
  • Assists with public relations for NEC – works with Program Manager to prepare and distribute marketing materials and recruit program participants.
  • Manages and maintains program inventory.
  • Transports program participants in City Passenger vehicles, such as a passenger van or mini-bus.
  • Assists with facility support, including but not limited to wildlife monitoring, light custodial tasks, and park closing on program evenings.
  • Enforces regulations and standards of conduct, observing necessary precautions to ensure safety of all program participants and rendering first aid in cases of minor injury.
  • Works as a team member of the Natural Resources Unit of the Parks and Natural Resources Division to further the mission of the Department.
  • Assists City of Raleigh with clean-up and repair during inclement weather situations.

Compensation Information

Hiring Range

$20.63 – $27.00
