Learn, play, and explore the field of outdoor education with a seasonal position on one of Mecklenburg County's nature center teams. Several positions are open now with 10-month and 3-month positions starting as early as February.

Summary

Position details: Duties and schedules vary by center. Expect to work a part-time schedule in spring/fall (20-30 hours per week) and full-time during summer (35-40 hours per week) on a varied schedule. These positions will assist with environmental education and outdoor adventure programs including summer day camp. Work includes weekends and occasional evenings.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with developing and facilitating environmental education, outdoor adventure, and summer day camp programs to include curricular school programs, paddlesports, outreach programs, and hiking.
  • Work with a wide variety of audiences with different ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Assist with the care and feeding of exhibit and program animals.
  • Assist with customer service duties including answering visitor questions and working the cash register.
  • Present programs on weekends, evenings, or holidays as assigned.
  • Assist with special events, garden maintenance, and other tasks as assigned.
  • May be required to transport participants in agency vehicle.

 

Qualifications: Qualified applicants must have or be working toward a BS/BA degree in one of the following fields: natural/environmental sciences, environmental education, recreation or related field.

  • Experience in environmental education or outdoor recreation programming
  • A strong desire to work with children in an outdoor setting
  • Able to travel 3-5 miles on unpaved trails.
  • Current first aid and CPR certification
  • Knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Piedmont region of North Carolina
