Responsible for the development and implementation of environmental and inquiry based programming that correlates with state science standards at Forest Hill Nature Area (FHNA) and field programs. Incumbents in this job classification work alongside FHNA Program Director to develop, coordinate, supervise and instruct the day to day activities of program areas and provide lead direction to nature guides, interns and volunteers.

Summary

Essential Functions/Skills:

Professionally serve as the lead Educator for FHNA. Building key relationships with administration and teachers in order to integrate innovative place-based learning that correlates with classroom curriculum.

Community engagement through events, presentations and marketing outreach.

Continually adapt program content based upon grade level and age groups, weather, group dynamics and formative assessments and feedback from teachers and supervisors.

Ability to communicate environmental and science concepts to a wide range of audiences. Plan and execute technology integration for citizen science and project based education. Assists in the maintenance of trails and facilities.

Professional Experience and Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in Education, Biology or related field. Masters degree preferred.

STEM technology integration and management using iPads for data collection and science programming.

Michigan teacher certificate in K-8 or high school.

5+ years’ experience teaching in formal setting.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

Supervisory experience that includes demonstrated ability to lead and train staff and volunteers as well as monitor skills.

Collaborative work style
Ability to present to wide audience, provide training to adults and mentor interns. Knowledge of environmental issues and Mid-Michigan natural resources.

 

Physical Requirements:

Ability to hike on uneven grounds up to 7 miles a day.

Physical ability to life and carry heavy objects at least 45 pounds. Every day will involve bending, lifting, hiking, getting up and down off the ground and being actively hiking all day.

This physically demanding position involves frequent exposure to the elements in all seasons.

Compensation Information

Salary Range: $47,000-$53,000 annually

Full Year: 220 Days
