Summary
The Interpretive Naturalist will expand upon, develop, and manage programs with limited supervision, and prepare communications and content that motivate positive stewardship and reduces the environmental impacts of visitation and recreation on Jekyll Island.

Description of duties:
- The primary duties will include the development, coordination, and execution of public outreach programs and various nature tours and programs. Current programs include Gatorology (American Alligators), Ranger Walks (Bald Eagles), and the Junior Ranger Program (Marsh, Forest, and Dune Habitats).
- Constantly adapt programs by ensuring up-to-date information that creates an exciting guest experience while providing accurate information that aligns with the conservation mission of the JIA.
- Creates engaging program content that motivates positive stewardship and reduced the environmental impacts of visitation and recreation of Jekyll Island.
- Conducts public and private nature programs and tours ensuring personal and group safety.
- Facilitates the recruitment, training, and quality involvement of volunteers and staff in coordination with the appropriate department supervisors.
- Collaborate with other JIA departments on the creation of visual aids, new ideas, and resources necessary for program evolution.
- Works closely with the Director of Conservation to assess budgets, revenue goals, and project outcomes.
- Responsible for the care and upkeep of assigned equipment.
- Completes assigned training and engages in relevant professional development.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- A minimum of 4 years of applied experience is required including formal or informal education and interpretation in natural resource recreation, conservation ecology, wildlife management, or aquarium and zoo studies, using the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience designing and facilitating public and private educational programs is required.
- Completion of the National Association of Interpretation’s Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) Training Course or similar educational certification is required within the first year of employment.
- Advanced Training for Environmental Educators through EEA or similar organization is highly preferred. For example, Project WET, Project WILD, and Project Learning Tree are acceptable substitutions or additions.
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, a positive demeanor, and a demonstrated ability to work and solve problems independently.
- Must be comfortable handling different classes of animals including turtles, snakes, alligators, and birds.
- Knowledge of southeastern natural history, coastal environments, and proper identification of birds
- Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, calmly, and efficiently.
- Uses independent judgment, personal experience, and training to ensure quality guest interactions and exceptional customer service according to policy.
- Experience maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of an organization.
- Self-motivated; ability to self-manage time to ensure that all primary responsibilities are met.
- Experience in conducting programs for a diverse audience.
- Experience with Point of Sale (POS) system management is highly preferred.
- Strong proficiency in all common Microsoft Office applications is required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to work varied shifts seasonally including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Required to complete CPR and First Aid/Stop the Bleed training
Compensation Information
Department/Division: Conservation
Status: Full-time Employee, hourly
Pay: $15.91-$20.88 per hour (DOQ)
Reports to: Director of Conservation
Benefits: Full Benefits eligible including health insurance, flex benefits, 10 paid holidays, vacation and sick leave accrual, amenities pass, and parking.
Retirement: State Employee Retirement System -GSEPS (Pension plus matching 401k)
