Canopy is looking for a passionate educator and leader to join our team and grow our education programs in neighborhoods throughout the Midpeninsula.

Summary

The Education Director is responsible for implementing Canopy’s Education Programs Strategy and
goals set by staff and the Education Committee. They ensure that the education programs achieve
Canopy’s goals of increasing knowledge of the benefits of trees, offering opportunities to enjoy trees
and nature, building the skills and capacity of residents to plant and steward trees in their community,
and empowering people to act in support of the long-term health and growth of the urban forest. The
Education Director reports to the Senior Director of Programs and manages Canopy’s Environmental
Educator, Youth Programs Manager, and Adult Education Coordinator (this role will temporarily be
handled by the Education Director who will subsequently be responsible for hiring this position, once
onboarded). The Education Director implements and oversees Canopy’s education programs including:

  • Elementary - High School: In-school lessons and Wellness Tree Walks. We prioritize offering our services to schools with high need, as determined by state and school data.
  • High School: Teen Urban Foresters (TUFs). The TUF program offers paid internships to local high school students, prioritizing East Palo Alto (EPA), eastern Menlo Park, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) applicants. The TUFs participate in tree planting days, outreach projects, enrichment sessions, and leadership training.
  • High School: Junior Forester Leadership Program. An after-school nature play and education program for EPA elementary students, co-led by Menlo-Atherton high school students.
  • High School: a yearly mini Community Forestry School for Mountain View teens.
  • Adult: Monthly Tree Walks and a yearly Community Forestry School (CFS), both open to attendees from any local city. Tree walks are free and led by certified arborists. CFS is a 9-week course for adults to learn about urban forestry from industry professionals.
  • Adult: Additional various Special events (e.g. Arbor Week Festivals) and presentations, depending on the year.

The Education Director will lead a highly creative and passionate team and will support education staff
in establishing program goals, creating performance plans, identifying relevant professional
development opportunities, and ensuring that new and existing curriculum and program content is
culturally relevant to the communities served and aligned with applicable school standards. The
Education Director will center Canopy’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Policy, ensuring that
Canopy education programs are inclusive and welcoming to all and that they feature speakers,
volunteers, and participants from a diverse range of experience, ages, and backgrounds.

The Education Director will take special care to honor Canopy’s DEI commitment devoting no less than 65% of the Education Department resources to untapped communities, including developing new programming. Canopy’s funding matrix relies upon a mixture of grants, contracts with cities and counties, and contributions from individual donors. The Education Director will assist the Senior Director of Philanthropy and Senior Director of Programs with the preparation of grant proposals, contracts, reports, and will occasionally participate in grant cycle launches or conversations with funders in order to present information about Canopy’s education programs.

It will be the responsibility of the Education Director to track the education program deliverables from various funding sources and ensure that education staff are meeting them and tracking relevant  metrics in Canopy’s database, including Salesforce and spreadsheets.
