The District is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Public Engagement Specialist in the Community Outreach & Business Engagement Division. Reporting to the Public Engagement Manager, you will provide oversight, management, and instruction in fulfilling the District's organizational outreach efforts.

Summary

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (District) is a regional government agency that provides water reclamation and flood management services for about 1.1 million people in 28 communities in the greater Milwaukee area. The District's mission protects public health and the environment through world-class, cost-effective water resource management, leadership, and partnership.  

The District is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Public Engagement Specialist in the Community Outreach & Business Engagement Division.  Reporting to the Public Engagement Manager, you will provide oversight, management, and instruction in fulfilling the District's organizational outreach efforts. You will also educate, inform, and create public awareness of the various causes and impacts of water pollution and stormwater runoff, the improvement of water quality, the importance of green infrastructure, and water conservation stewardship and sustainability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 

  • Coordinate and lead efforts to create forums, workshops, and other opportunities to educate the public on regional water issues, the role the District plays in improving water quality, and pathways to a career in the water sector.
  • Serve as internal support in the area of meeting outreach goals.  Track progress towards goals and provide reports on efforts and initiatives.
  • Coordination, strategic planning, and development and implementation of District-wide outreach plans.
  • Compile, update, and distribute multimedia outreach instructional materials, learning tools, web-based platforms, and other informational resources.
  • Develop a broad range of partnerships and relational networks with school administrators, teachers, nature/ecology centers, museums, and other leaders from water and environmental associations to increase awareness about water quality.
  • Successfully negotiate and develop Memorandum of Understandings (MOU) for contracted services and grants in which the District is a designated partner.
  • Develop and implement outreach materials and marketing plan.  Conduct ongoing assessments of academic learning benchmarks and public outreach needs.
  • Provide direction, orientation, training, and support to seasonal interns and/or individuals employed with or through the District via contract or association.
  • Complete special projects as assigned.


Qualifications:
 

  • Bachelor's degree in communication, business, education, or related field. 
  • Four to five years of job-related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience interfacing with public, private, and community-based entities.
  • Experience in the development of outreach strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in public speaking and meeting facilitation.  
  • Experience in developing public relations materials.
  • Experience in compiling statistics and providing reports and presentations.
  • Project management and grant proposal writing experience.
  • Experience in planning workshops, meetings, or community events.
  • Experience with environmental education, issues, or outreach.
  • Computer software proficiency.
  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record at time of application and throughout employment.


Supplemental Information:

Occasional evening and weekend hours are required for attendance at outreach events.  

While performing the duties of this job, you will work in an office environment 70% of the time and travel to various locations 30% of the time.

$77,028.10 - $90,654.42
