New York City Audubon is seeking a seasonal intern to assist with our public engagement, education, and events. The Engagement and Events Intern will play a vital role in helping the organization raise awareness and educate New Yorkers about urban biodiversity and sustainability. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic, outgoing “people person” with a passion for public engagement and an interest in environmental education and conservation. This is a terrific opportunity to gain experience in nonprofit program implementation, guest/public engagement, volunteer management, and event planning and production.

Summary

New York City Audubon is seeking a seasonal intern to assist with our public engagement, education, and events. The Engagement and Events Intern will play a vital role in helping the organization raise awareness and educate New Yorkers about urban biodiversity and sustainability. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic, outgoing “people person” with a passion for public engagement and an interest in environmental education and conservation.  This is a terrific opportunity to gain experience in nonprofit program implementation, guest/public engagement, volunteer management, and event planning and production.

Responsibilities

The Intern will report to NYC Audubon’s Advocacy and Engagement Associate and support additional staff at the organization on specific projects. Primary responsibilities are as follows:

  • Staff NYC Audubon’s seasonal nature center on Governors Island two days a week, including setting up activities, interacting with visitors, coordinating volunteers, and answering questions from the public.
  • Support the organization’s Governors Island Artist-in-Residence program including assisting with public workshops, communicating with artists, and helping interpret art works for visitors.
  • Represent NYC Audubon at public community, parks, and wildlife festivals: staff NYC Audubon’s activity tables, talk about NYC Audubon’s work with the public, and answer questions about birds and conservation.
  • Support other NYC Audubon member, donor, and volunteer event production with tasks including event set up, guest communications, event logistics, and follow up.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Skills & Qualifications

  • Excellent communications skills with comfort public speaking and presenting to groups
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with good attention to detail
  • Experience with event planning and coordination
  • Proactive problem-solving skills
  • Customer service mindset
  • Course work or degree in environmental education or similar field preferred
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

 

Other Requirements

  • Ability to travel to and work across all five boroughs, often outdoors
  • Comfort traveling on a ferry to Governors Island (ferry fee covered by NYC Audubon)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365/Office, Google Suite, and Zoom
  • Comfort and desire to work and communicate with people of varied backgrounds
  • Flexibility, collaboration, and sense of humor a must
  • Interest in environmental conservation


Timing and Location Details

The Intern position is expected to be 20-24 hours per week which can be split over three or four days a week, preferably Thursday through Sunday.  We hope an Intern could work the following schedule:

  • Late April - May: at least 12-15 hours per week
  • June - August: 20-24 hours per week
  • September-October: 12-15 hours per week

Some scheduling flexibility is possible, and we can accommodate candidates juggling other school, family, and work responsibilities.

 

This position is primarily in-person; location varies between NYC Audubon’s office in Manhattan (1-2 days/week), Governors Island (2 days/week), and community festivals around all five boroughs (2-3 days/month).

Compensation Information

This is a seasonal, temporary hourly position. While the position is not eligible for benefits, the Intern will accrue sick time according to NYC Law, and pro-rated holiday pay for office holidays. Wage is $18 per hour.
