Job Summary
Are you passionate about the intersection of environmental resource protection and outdoor recreation? Do you enjoy tracking local outdoor recreation trends and want to help shape the future of inclusive outdoor recreation experiences in over 40,000 acres of City-conserved land?
The City of Fort Collins is hiring a new Environmental Planner position in the Natural Areas Department with strong collaboration and project management skills. This new position will be responsible for managing, collecting, tracking, and reporting qualitative and quantitative visitor use data to establish mitigation measures that address recreation conflicts, visitor capacity issues, or impacts to natural and cultural resources. The Environmental Planner will also be responsible for serving as a project manager, leading the planning, design and implementation of soft-surface trail and trailhead projects, while ensuring the protection of sensitive natural and cultural resource values. This position is part of the Planning and Special Projects work group that drives long-term decisions related to natural resource protection, appropriate recreation development, land stewardship and management to help implement the department’s goals and mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.
- Supports management planning as an assistant planner for an upcoming update (years 1 and 2) and leads a future management update (years 3+).
- Designs, implements, and manages conservation projects.
- Conducts public outreach and prepares written content, reports, social media, and presentations on environmental issues.
- Presents to diverse audiences ranging from one-on-one conversations to community meetings.
- Responds to citizen, employee, and City Council inquiries, including complaints and service requests.
- Selects and manages consulting contracts with environmental, construction management, and engineering firms.
- Serves on task forces and teams related to natural resources protection, sustainability issues, as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
- Prepares memos, reports, and recommendations for City and Natural Areas leadership.
- Collects and analyzes data and survey results.
- Contributes to data sets for planning and ongoing management.
- May solicit, prepare, and administer grants.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of fundamentals of ecology or natural resource management or horticulture, or landscape architecture

- Knowledge of project management
- Ability to work collaboratively to identify issues and solve problems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Interest in learning new skills and growing competencies
Required Education
MINIMUM/PREFERREDEDUCATION LEVEL
Minimum College degree or equivalent work experience. Some positions may require functionally related certification or advanced degrees.
Experience Requirements
- 3-5 years related experience - management, environmental studies, natural landscape, architecture, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bilingual and/or Spanish fluency preferred.

Compensation Information
ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: $56,170.00 - $93,616.33 (Salaries are paid biweekly)
ANTICIPATED HIRING ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: $65,000.00 - 80,000.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)
