SAMO Youth is a young adult mentorship program focused on outdoor conservation in the Santa Monica Mountains with NPS Rangers for 8 weeks during the summer. It introduces 18 college students and recent graduates to stewardship and careers in public service through paid work. We provide experience in nursery, restoration, trails and facilities, and interpretation work, and more. We guide development through training and by visiting partner groups where students experience different career paths.

POSITION DETAILS:

  • Full-Time, Monday - Friday
  • 7 am - 3:30 pm, 8 hours/day
  • June 9th - August 1st
  • Eight-week program

Be part of a crew this summer and get hands on experience in various park career fields. From ecological restoration, trail maintenance, community engagement and more! 

The SAMO Youth program provides paid work experience and mentorship for college students. The goals of the program are to create a developmental work experience that:

  1. Promotes an ethic for conservation and stewardship.
  2. Introduces students to careers in public service.

LOCATION:
This position requires crew members to meet at multiple locations within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, including Los Angeles & Ventura County.

Work is outdoors, can be physically strenuous in hot conditions. Temperatures from 80° - 105° F. Potential exposure to poison oak, ticks, and rattlesnakes.

PARTNERSHIP:
The Santa Monica Mountains Fund works to protect and encourage appreciation and understanding of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

QUALIFIED CANDIDATES MUST:

  • Be currently enrolled in college or recently graduated.
  • Have reliable transportation.
  • Be able to hike 5 miles.
  • Be able to lift 40 to 50 lbs.
  • Have a safety mindset.
  • Have US work authorization.
