Are you fascinated by the local history and heritage of places you live or visit? Do you enjoy sharing stories with others? Then you might be the perfect candidate to be a Historic Specialist for the Sawtooth Interpretive and Historical Association this summer! This seasonal full-time position offers the chance to learn and share the stories of Idaho’s Sawtooth and Salmon River Country with visitors from around the world. As a Historic Specialist at the Stanley Museum, you'll manage daily museum operations, assist with special events, and spend your time off exploring Idaho's stunning Sawtooth National Recreation Area.

Summary

The mission of the Sawtooth Interpretive and Historical Association (SIHA) is to protect and share the natural and cultural history of the Sawtooth and Salmon River Country through education and preservation. As a Historic Specialist, you’ll manage daily museum operations, including merchandise sales and permits, maintain and create exhibits, coordinate community events like the annual History Day, and connect visitors to the region’s rich history.

This seasonal role (May 22–August 25, with opportunities to extend into September) offers free shared housing, professional development opportunities, team collaboration, and an opportunity to explore one of Idaho's most beautiful regions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background or interest in history, anthropology, interpretation, or education.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and written communications.
  • Enthusiasm for engaging with visitors and sharing local history.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a dynamic, remote environment.
  • Work effectively as an individual and a team member.
  • Positive and service oriented attitude and mindset.
  • Physically capable of standing for extended periods, walking a minimum of a mile, and lifting 20 pounds.
  • Familiarity with Google Suite, Canva, social media platforms, and POS systems (or a willingness to learn).

Compensation Information

 BENEFITS INCLUDE:  

  • $12/hour
  • Shared housing is provided free of charge at the Stanley Ranger Station compound or the Sawtooth Valley Work Center. 
  • Housing includes utilities (water, electric, sewer, garbage).
  • Housing units are furnished and include appliances and basic kitchenware.
  • Valued at ~$600/month (typical rental costs in Stanley range from $500-$1100).
  • Personal vehicle mileage is reimbursed (at $0.55/mile) for project work (NOT including traveling to and from work). 
  • 2 days off (these two days will be scheduled together but will not be Saturday & Sunday (i.e. days off may be Monday & Tuesday or Wednesday & Thursday, etc.). 
  • A half-hour lunch is scheduled each day. 
  • SIHA polo shirts, sun shirt, jacket, and name tag will be provided. PPE is provided including face masks, hand sanitizer, and other items to keep naturalists safe on the job.
  • Supplies and project materials are provided. 
  • Biweekly professional development lectures. 
  • Feedback regarding interpretive programs and development.
