Shelby Bottoms Nature Center, a facility of Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation, is seeking a part-time Naturalist I to join our team of educators and park professionals. This facility is located in a 950-acre park and natural area near downtown Nashville and the Cumberland River. Nature Center staff provide high-quality educational public programs and welcome thousands of Nashville students each year for field trips, as well as help to maintain the park trails, facilities, and museum.

Summary

The general job description for a Naturalist I position with Metro Nashville is posted below. In addition to these guidelines, the ideal candidate for this particular position will:

  • Have experience with outdoor educational programming for large groups of students in a field trip setting, or have some educational experience and be willing to train.
  • Have experience with trail management and/or safe power tool use.
  • Have knowledge of common invasive plants in Tennessee or previous experience removing invasive plants in another location.

Job Objective

Performs skilled work involved in organizing and teaching nature programs, and assists with development or direction of nature facilities, park research, and park management projects. Performs related duties as required.

Job Description

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizes and teaches nature programs.
    • Schedules and plans programs.
    • Takes reservations and registration for programs.
    • Conducts tours and field trips for groups.
    • Develops and presents slide presentations and other environmental education/recreation programs.
  • Assists with park research, park management, and special projects.
    • Conducts research and develops materials for programs.
    • Collects data, keeps records, and writes reports.
    • Works with staff on projects as assigned.
    • Assists with inventories of park flora, fauna, and other natural features.
  • Assists with the general operation of the nature center.
    • Greets and orients park visitors.
    • Informs visitors about the park, regulations, and nature center.
    • Answers inquiries and provides assistance to the general public.
    • Maintains files and records, and writes reports.
    • Assists with development and maintenance of literature and exhibits.
    • Performs various repair and maintenance duties on park grounds, trails, equipment, and facilities.
    • Attends workshops and in-services in related fields to gain expertise.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED/SUPERVISION RECEIVED

May supervise seasonal, volunteer staff members, and park visitors during hikes, programs, or special events.

Receives limited supervision and reports to the Nature Center Manager or designated supervisor, who is consulted on unusual or complex matters.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions when working in an outdoor environment. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, coats, goggles, gloves, or shields. Requires employees to work with all ages of park visitors and all sizes of groups. May also include office work, classroom instruction, guided hikes, research and work projects.

Requires substantial physical exertion such as hiking, climbing, bending, stooping, driving, or similar activities.

Employment Standards

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Education, Biology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Sustainability, Outdoor Recreation, or a related field from an accredited college or university. 

**Environmental or nature related experience may be considered in lieu of some education**

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Knowledge of the natural history of the area.
Knowledge of educational and interpretive methods and techniques.
Basic knowledge of natural resource research and management.
Skill in working with the public.
Ability to instruct park visitors with varying levels of physical and mental abilities.
Ability to develop, organize, and conduct environmental education programs.
Ability to involve participation of group members.
Ability to collect data, keep accurate records, and write reports.
Ability to write and speak effectively.
Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
Ability to clean and make minor repairs on equipment and facility.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
