Seasonal Appointment – August 2024 – March 2025 as Invasive Species Technician

Summary

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Stewardship Specialist or higher-level managers:
• Support regional staff in planning projects to meet regional, and agency goals.
• Survey, remove, and/or monitor invasive species (terrestrial plants, forest pest/pathogens)
• Provide guidance and support to field staff and volunteers (SCA, partners, etc.)
• Collect and manage field data using standardized methods.
• Maintain up-to-date project information in statewide databases (DESP, AGOL, iMapinvasives)
• Respond promptly to statewide Early Detection/Rapid Response needs.
• Organize and participate in education and outreach events.
• Perform native plantings/other restoration duties.
• Other duties may be assigned as needed.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A degree in forestry, environmental science, ecology, natural resources management, or a relevant discipline, such as aquatic ecology, conservation biology, etc.
One year or more experience with invasive species identification and control methods Experience with power tools, hand tools, or small engine equipment.


OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor; must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
• Experience working in an outdoor setting, and willing to work outdoors year-round and in all weather conditions.
• Experience with computer programs, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
• A working knowledge of GPS/GIS and ecological monitoring methods
• Ability to work, and maintain a good attitude, while performing physical work in a variety of conditions
• Strong interest in and commitment to environmental stewardship and team-oriented approach to solving environmental challenges.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
• Applicants must be willing to travel to NYS Parks throughout the NYC Region and the 5 Boroughs.
