The Tribal Center Coordinator at the Yellowstone Tribal Heritage Center (YTHC) plays a vital role in advancing Tribal education and engagement programs within Yellowstone National Park. Collaborating closely with Tribal partners, educators, and advocates, the Coordinator is responsible for welcoming presenters, coordinating their schedules and accommodations, and ensuring a hospitable environment for visitors.

Compensation:        $23.00 per hour + Housing Provided
Dates:                        May 5, 2024 – October 19, 2024 (Tuesdays/Wednesdays Off)

Summary Description

Yellowstone Forever (YF) is the official nonprofit partner of Yellowstone National Park. Our mission is to protect, preserve, and enhance Yellowstone National Park through education and philanthropy. YF connects people to Yellowstone through outstanding visitor experiences and educational programs and translates those experiences into lifelong support of the park and philanthropic investment in its future. Our educational programming and products help people enhance their understanding and appreciation of the wildlife, natural wonders, and cultural history of the park. YF’s operations include Park Stores in and around Yellowstone; the Yellowstone Forever Institute, which offers in-depth educational programing for people of all ages; and a supporter program which raises funds for priority park projects.

The Tribal Center Coordinator supports Tribal education and engagement programs specific to the Yellowstone Tribal Heritage Center (YTHC), an initiative that highlights Native American artists, scholars, and presenters. Yellowstone Forever, alongside the National Park Service, are committed to working with Tribal partners, educators, and advocates to elevate the Tribal presence and representation in Yellowstone National Park. This position plays a critical role in YTHC operations, working with Tribal presenters, National Park Service staff, Yellowstone Forever staff, and visitors. Responsibilities of this position include coordinating Tribal guest presenters and support during time at YTHC.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Greet and orient presenters to the Old Faithful area, including housing areas, and promote a friendly, welcoming, and professional atmosphere, and a high level of customer service
  • Coordinate arrival and departure for presenters
  • Provide support to presenters by scheduling self to cover schedule as needed to maintain sufficient presence at the center
  • Interact with visitors, and effectively communicate relevant information related to the YTHC and park Tribal education initiatives, in addition to answering park orientation questions
  • Assist on-site presenters with delivering programs and help keep their presentation areas and visitor engagement areas tidy
  • Facilitate and maintain exhibit space and information desk and recharge area by keeping areas clean and well organized
  • Assure presenter housing is clean and ready for each arriving artist and let staff know of needed repairs
  • Track, collect, and share Tribal demonstrator feedback, insight, and successes
  • Provide notes and feedback on program to Tribal Engagement Manager
  • Maintain program inventory and work with supervisor to order supplies as needed
  • Represent Yellowstone National Park accurately and positively
  • Foster a collaborative, welcoming environment with presenters, staff, and visitors
  • Work with both Yellowstone Forever and Yellowstone National Park staff
  • Travel into Yellowstone, throughout the Greater Yellowstone area, as required
  • Other tasks as assigned by Tribal Engagement Manager or other designated leadership
     

Basic Qualifications

  • Proven ability to quickly learn and apply new systems, processes, and applications
  • Self-motivated with a sound approach to problem solving and timely task completion
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include nights and weekends when needed
  • Ability to lift boxes/equipment weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to bend, crouch and lift and carry up to 35 pounds
  • Able to interact with the public demonstrating courtesy throughout the summer in variable weather conditions and with varying levels of visitation and workload
  • Ability to represent Yellowstone Forever and the National Park Service in a courteous and professional manner, and promote safe behaviors and workspaces
  • This position may involve driving vehicles, therefore applicants must hold and maintain a valid US driver’s license, and maintain a favorable driving record for insurance purposes
  • A satisfactory criminal background check are conditions of employment
     

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Previous experience working with Tribal presenters and guests
  • Experience providing information to diverse audiences
  • Previous experience in a fast-paced visitor center, or similar experience
  • Strong computer skills, including being able to operate a PC or Mac computer, and tablets
  • Experience working in a non-profit environment and/or with artists or cultural demonstrators
  • Knowledge of Yellowstone National Park

Compensation Information

Compensation:        $23.00 per hour + Housing Provided (40 hrs/week)
