Do you enjoy working with young people and have a penchant for environmental education? If yes, read on! The South Santiam Watershed Council is hiring for a part-time Watershed Education Coordinator. The person in this position will lead our ongoing education programs, and have the opportunity to develop new programming with community partners as well! This is a great position for an early career professional or someone looking to deepen their connection with community-based outdoor education.

Summary

The Watershed Education Program Coordinator will serve with the South Santiam Watershed Council to provide outdoor experiential learning opportunities throughout the watershed.  The position will play a vital role in coordinating both Outdoor School and Salmon Watch for local students. In addition, they will work with student groups, and develop one or more Youth Watershed Councils to conduct service learning projects, discuss watershed issues and opportunities, and coordinate small-scale restoration projects.  The goals of this program are to address local watershed issues, increase community care for and understanding of watershed function, generate community involvement and support for watershed council activities, and to make real, tangible improvements to watershed health and contributions to local students and their families.

Background

The South Santiam Watershed Council is a community organization with a goal of protecting and enhancing the watershed for all who live, work and play here.  Projects to improve watershed health include fish passage barrier removal, planting native vegetation, adding large wood and other structures to waterways, and monitoring watershed conditions.  Key partners for these efforts include the U.S. Forest Service; the Sweet Home, Scio, and Lebanon school districts; the Calapooia Watershed Council, and many other entities and individuals throughout our service area.

The Council is deepening its commitment to understanding the ways that restoration and conservation work has historically centered dominant culture. Experience in, and openness to, exploring concepts of equity, diversity, inclusion and justice to propel this area of work is essential. All program areas are expected to support, integrate, and enhance these efforts across all areas of our work.
