The Allegheny County Park Rangers are the ambassadors of our parks and the catalyst for stewardship among park visitors. Park Rangers offer educational and interpretive programming as well as outreach programming to local schools and communities. They also provide park visitors with orientation and information while ensuring park regulations are being followed. The Allegheny County Park Rangers represent the ideas of conservation and stewardship of our natural, cultural and recreational resources.

Summary

They also provide park visitors with orientation and information while ensuring park regulations are being followed. The Allegheny County Park Rangers represent the ideas of conservation and stewardship of our natural, cultural and recreational resources.

Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for providing information, education and quality customer services to visitors of Allegheny County Parks, promoting recreation and safe utilization of the parks in accordance with applicable provisions of the Allegheny County Code of Ordinances, and working various natural and recreational resource management projects, including but not limited to, trail building, invasive species removal and tree planting. Though Park Rangers are headquartered in North and South Parks, they will perform duties throughout the nine (9) Allegheny County Parks. Seasonal employment for this position runs from 5/15/2023 to 11/14/2023. Position may be terminated at any time due to weather conditions or project availability.



Duties:

  • Develop and present interpretive programming in a variety of settings including scheduled park programs, special events, and outreach programs.
  • Learn natural, cultural, and recreation resources within the parks.
  • Provide information and answer questions from visitors about park resources, facilities, environmental features, and history of County parks; provide maps and directions.
  • Patrol park on foot and by vehicle; explain park rules and regulations to the public.
  • Report complaints and/or incidents involving the public to appropriate public safety personnel.
  • Assist with special events.
  • Assist with outreach programs that include natural, cultural, and recreational resource-based topics. 
  • Learn and implement natural resource management skills like tree planting and invasive species removal.
  • Learn and implement sustainable trail construction, design, and general trail maintenance.  
  • Learn and implement volunteer management skills. 
  • Report complaints and/or incidents involving the public to appropriate public safety personnel. 
  • Perform other related duties as required or requested.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of:

  • Operations and functions of Park Rangers within the park system. 
  • Outdoor recreation and education.
  • Natural and cultural resources that exist within County parks.


Ability to:

  • Act as a park ambassador and provide accurate and responsive information to park visitors. 
  • Assist in implementing operational aspects of a new initiative.
  • Establish effective working relationships with managers, co-workers, and public safety personnel in ensure that hazards and safety concerns are addressed and resolved so that visitors have safe and enjoyable experiences within the parks.
  • Utilize teachable moments to encourage visitors to follow park rules and regulations.
  • Stand and walk long distances for prolonged periods of time daily often on uneven difficult terrain, climb and descend steep inclines, engage in frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
  • Work outside in all types of weather, resulting in exposure to extreme cold, heat and humidity, rain, wind, direct sunlight, etc.
  • Maintain flexible work schedules at different park locations.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Use a computer, Microsoft Office, and Adobe. 


Skills:
Residency: Not required to live in Allegheny County
Veterans' Preference: Will be awarded to eligible candidates.
