The City of Claremont Human Services Department is looking for a highly enthusiastic and experienced individual to assist in the supervision of the recreation division, including the 2500-acre Claremont Hills Wilderness Park and Park Ranger program.

The Wilderness Park & Recreation (Human Services) Supervisor position offers a unique opportunity to work on high-profile projects that impact the community. The Claremont Hills Wilderness Park is a regional destination, attracting visitors from across the San Gabriel Valley and beyond. This position will supervise the daily operations of the wilderness park and the Park Ranger program, including trail maintenance, park improvements, habitat restoration, parking operations, enforcement, grant and sponsorship management, fire prevention, and more. This position will also be responsible for the implementation of the CHWP Master Plan and acting as the liaison to multiple stakeholder groups, such as the Friends of the Wilderness Park.

This position has multiple opportunities for growth and to “think outside the box” through creative solutions and programming.  This position directly coordinates the operations of the Park Ranger program, wilderness park, and sports field allocations. In the future, this position may also supervise one full-time Program Coordinator responsible for contract classes, facility rentals, and front counter operations.

Hours of work for this position are Monday thru Thursday, from 7:30 am until 6:00 pm (38-hour work week). The position will be required to work flexible hours including some early mornings, late evenings, and weekends on occasion.   All staff is required to work Special Events including but not limited to 4th of July, Halloween Spooktacular, Holiday Promenade, and Spring Celebration

Ideal Candidate

Qualified applicants will have four years in human services or recreation activities including one year of management and supervisory experience.  Also required is a Bachelor’s Degree with major course work in recreation, human services, public administration, ecology, biology, criminal justice, or a related field and a valid Class C California driver’s license and a good driving record.  


The ideal candidate will also have:
  • Experience in wildland management
  • Knowledge of native flora and fauna
  • Experience in trail maintenance and habitat restoration
  • A PC 832 certificate, or be able to obtain certification after hire
  • Interpretive programming experience
  • Proven track record of managing grant funds

 

Compensation Information

This position offers a highly competitive salary with an attractive and competitive benefit package as outlined below. The starting salary for this position will be based on the competitive labor market and the successful candidate's qualifications, and experience.

  $69,228.00 - $83,628.00 Annually

The City of Claremont offers an attractive and competitive benefit package, including:

  • 2% COLA effective 7/1/2023 
  • 2% at 55 PERS retirement (Classic Members), Employee pays 7% of salary; 2% at 62 PERS retirement (New Member) Employee pays 5.75% of salary
  • $1,014 a month for medical allowance, with any remaining money deposited into employee's ICMA deferred compensation account or taken as taxable income
  • 96 hours - 160 hours vacation based on years of service
  • 123 holiday and floating holiday hours
  • 56 hours of Administrative Leave
  • 96 sick hours per year (may bring up to 200 hours of sick leave from current employer)
  • $75,000 life insurance on employee and $10,000 on dependents
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
