Reporting to the Education Director, the Education & Outreach Coordinator will work at the intersection of multiple SYRCL programs including Education, Wild & Scenic Film Festival, and Community Engagement. This role is responsible for providing K-12 education programs, developing curriculum aligned to national and state education standards, organizing outreach events, recruitment, management, and engagement of volunteers, and managing SYRCL’s River Ambassador program.

Summary

The Education & Outreach Coordinator will also communicate and coordinate with volunteers, teachers, administrators, sub-contractors, and community organizations throughout SYRCL’s education and community engagement programs. Other duties during the River Ambassador program include hiring, training, and working with three part-time River Captain employees and the River Ambassador volunteers. In addition, they will assist with the Yuba River Cleanup in September.

This position requires 40 hours of work per week, including occasional evenings and weekends. During the River Ambassador Season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), this position will work a modified work week to successfully execute the program. The successful candidate is excited by a fast-paced environment, passionate about environmental education, and community engagement. They are comfortable working full days outside and can adapt lessons, schedules, activities, and talking points quickly when environmental factors or student, volunteer, or visitor needs change.  

This is an outstanding opportunity for a professional with at least one year of experience working with students in an outdoor setting and who strives to inspire students and community members through engaging education and outreach programs and help make a difference in our community and beyond. The ideal candidate will have experience in education and community outreach. Other qualifications include:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA/BS degree in education, environmental science, communications, or related field 
  • At least 1 year of experience working with students in an outdoor setting. 
  • Experience managing volunteers.
  • Experience creating presentations (to communicate SYRCL’s work to the public)
  • Experience and comfort presenting to groups, i.e., strong public speaking skills.
  • Excellent “people skills” and a commitment to positive interactions with diverse community members
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and Email. 
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for scheduling, data collection, and record keeping. 
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, and exercise good judgment.  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Readily available by phone and email
  • Available to work weekends and occasional evenings.  
  • Passion for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion is a must. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Fluency in Spanish; ability to speak with visitors and students comfortably and confidently in Spanish.
  • Ability to read and write in Spanish.
  • Experience producing press releases, e-news articles, blog posts, etc.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • CPR/First Aid certified.
  • Previous experience with an environmental or non-profit organization
  • A valid driver’s license is required. Access to reliable transportation is highly preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Education:

  • Teach Salmon Expedition rafting and classroom lessons to educate students (3rd-6th grade) and the general public about the salmon life cycle, habitat requirements, impacts of the Gold Rush, and river ecology. These expeditions include daily school field trips, and several public trips, between September and December
  • Assist with the curation of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival School programs including film prospecting, selection, and curriculum development.
  • Implement Wild & Scenic Film Festival School Programs during the annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival in February
  • Work with the Education Director to refine current and develop new education programs.
  • Participate in education, outreach, and volunteer management training.
  • Assist with education program logistics, including communicating with teachers, volunteers, and subcontractors.
  • Record and analyze student assessment data.
  • Write curriculum and create supporting materials aligned to Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science standards.
  • Present to large groups of students and community members. 

Community Outreach:

  • Manage the EnviroFair during the Wild & Scenic film festival, which includes recruiting and coordinating with local community organizations.
  • Manage SYRCL’s River Ambassador program, including hiring, training, and working with three part-time River Captain employees and the River Ambassador volunteers.
  • Coordinate with River Ambassador volunteers and River Captains to confirm scheduling each weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day
  • Educate visitors about river stewardship and remove trash, dog waste, and fire pits as needed.
  • Maintain and analyze volunteer and visitation data.
  • Coordinate with community organizations, Nevada County, the City of Nevada City, and the City of Grass Valley during community wide events where SYRCL hosts an outreach booth.
  • Train and work with volunteers during different community outreach and engagement events
  • Promote SYRCL’s work and programs while tabling during community outreach events.

General:

  • Promote SYRCL’s mission and steward SYRCL’s overall well-being.
  • Participate in staff meetings and other activities which support the development of SYRCL.
  • Participate in SYRCL-wide events throughout the year.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Able to work on a computer for up to 8 hours a day, including sitting at a desk for extended periods.
  • Able to read a computer screen and manual dexterity to operate a keyboard.
  • Able to speak clearly on the phone and in person and be understood by others.
  • Able to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to sit on a raft for up to 6 hours at a time.
  • Able to work extended periods outside.

Compensation Information

The compensation package includes an hourly pay rate range of $20.00 - $23.00, depending on experience. We also provide 100% paid health insurance for full-time employees, 401K plan participation with 2% employer match (fully vested after 3 years), 10 paid holidays, 3 sick days, and 14 days per year Personal Time Off (PTO) earned on an accrual basis.
