Charleston Collegiate School is seeking a full-time Outdoor Education teacher who is passionate about student-centered, collaborative, experiential learning for grades 6-12.

Summary

Charleston Collegiate School is seeking a full-time Outdoor Education teacher for the 2023-2024 school year.  Successful candidates will be creative, energetic, and highly skilled teachers who are passionate about student-centered, collaborative, experiential learning. Candidates should also have a proven track record of success teaching in an outdoor education setting.  Ideal candidates will have experience teaching middle and high school students and the capacity to design and teach a variety of courses for grades 6-12 that explore topics such as group dynamics, leadership, collaboration, wilderness skills and safety, ecology, and stewardship of the natural environment. 

Charleston Collegiate School (CCS) has an outdoor education center located on our main campus that features a challenge course with one high rope element and a multitude of low elements, an archery range, a couple of outdoor classrooms, a maritime forest, a freshwater swamp with a dock, and access to a tidewater marsh.  

Charleston Collegiate is an independent day school which strives to recognize, nurture, and challenge each of its students.  Located on Johns Island, South Carolina, twenty minutes from Charleston’s historic district, CCS is the only co-educational, non-sectarian, preschool through 12th grade, independent school in Charleston’s metropolitan area.

CCS is a supportive learning community that coaches students to become lifelong learners.  A CCS education focuses on the pillars of project-based learning, entrepreneurship, and outdoor education.

Essential Qualifications and Responsibilities:

  • Teach a full load of five classes to middle and high school students.
  • Deep commitment to equity and diversity.
  • Deep commitment to the CCS core values and educational pillars.
  • Experience with experiential education and project-based learning.
  • Positive ‘can-do’ attitude and growth mindset
  • Creative approach to implementing and designing a wide ranging outdoor education curriculum
  • Willingness to participate in student-life activities e.g., advisory, club leadership, coaching, after-school programs, such as an outdoor or fishing club
  • Ability to lead and/or organize off-campus outdoor themed trips and activities
  • Inspire and help teachers of other disciplines use the Outdoor Education Center as a resource for their classes
  • Capacity to maintain the safety and enhance the Outdoor Education Center facility
  • Vision to create programs for the community based out of the OEC, such as a leadership session for executives
  • Proven ability to connect with and inspire middle and high school students
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a related field and relevant experience, such as an Outward Bound instructor, camp director, or outdoor education teacher 
  • Minimum of 3-5 years teaching experience 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with Project-based, Experiential Learning
  • Advanced degree / postgraduate qualification
  • The ability to teach other subject disciplines and elective courses
