Summary
This is a full-time temporary summer position with a start date of Monday, June 17, 2024 and ending Monday, August 12, 2024. Applicants who can commit to all work dates receive hiring preference. The hourly rate is $17.50/per hour. Work schedule is 40 hours a week, Monday – Friday, 8:15 AM- 4:30 PM, with predetermined exceptions for leading extended day experiences depending on your assigned age group. First Aid and CPR training is provided. Onsite housing may be available. Requires a drug screen and criminal background check before hiring.
Responsibilities:
- Lead hands-on environmental education activities with an emphasis on science, nature, and agriculture to your assigned age-group of campers (Curriculum is pre-written)
- Possess a genuine passion for working with youths entirely outdoors, in all weather, while maintaining a positive energy and attitude. (Access to indoor/covered spaces for thunderstorms, etc)
- Prepare materials and equipment for all lesson components; maintain a clean and organized learning space
- Be a role model and provide educational support and feedback to Junior Counselors
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of program participants; social/emotional needs for children within their group; proactive behavioral management and basic first aid
- Display a high level of commitment and enthusiasm for all camp activities
- Maintain positive relationships with campers, parents/guardians and staff; work well on a team
Qualifications:
- One year of college studies in environmental-based backgrounds and/or experience working with groups of children in formal or informal settings (school, nature center, summer camp, scouts, etc). Experience with groups of 10 or more children is preferred
- Enthusiasm for exploring nature with children; basic knowledge of the natural world
- Experience (personal or professional) with one or more program activity areas is preferred: camp songs and games, leading hikes with children, gardening, farm care, naturalist skills, cooperative games, nature arts, building and tinkering, storytelling and role playing games, survival skills, and outdoor adventures!
- Willingness and ability to work outdoors in all weather (including summer heat & humidity and/or rain) and to be physically active for most of an 8 hour day. (This is a physically intensive job that includes significant movement throughout the day, including walking and hiking on uneven terrain, kneeling, bending, and lifting)
- Ability to be emotionally and socially “on” for the majority of a 8 hours of direct time with campers, requiring emotional presence and energy to engage with children and coworkers
- Demonstrated commitment, reliability, punctuality, and responsibility
