Develop and coordinate requested and public programs, including indoor and outdoor events that highlight the park’s resources. Work within the Naturalist Department to implement engaging educational materials, interpretive displays, public outreach, and other assigned projects which includes garden maintenance and animal care of wildlife program ambassador reptiles, amphibians, raptors, and mammals.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation, or a closely related field, and a minimum of one to three years of environmental education experience, including public programming and visitor services or equivalent. Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as enthusiastic interpersonal skills. Knowledge of local species, natural history, and ecological habitats.

Other Expectations

  • Represent the park district by maintaining good public relations with fellow staff, volunteers, park visitors, and community members.
  • Develop and present a diverse array of public programming both at Carlisle Reservation and throughout the Park District on a wide variety of topics for various age groups.
  • Be present and assist with large events, ongoing programming, and improvements both at Carlisle and throughout the Park District. These include but are not limited to:
                  * Maple Sugaring * Trucks, Tractors, and Trains * Little Green Choo Programming
                  * Halloween Fair * Holiday Lights * Lorain County Fair booth planning and implementation 
                  * Children’s Nature Discovery Trail improvements and programming * Summer Camps
                  * Wildlife Garden improvements and programming 
  • Present the majority of requested programming coming from Carlisle Reservation, both on-site and off-site, including programs for senior, civic, and educational organizations.
  • The ability to work independently or within a team and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions particularly as they change over time. 
  • Performs administrative and clerical tasks and activities to assist with the efficient operation of the facility or Park District, including correspondence, preparing reports, and updating and maintaining records. Uses a variety of office and programming equipment and is expected to have proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office and similar programs.
  • Daily husbandry care for program ambassador reptiles and amphibians, which includes:
    • Daily care and feeding of turtles, snakes, toad, and salamander
    • Conducting pop-up programming with visitors as needed while you are performing husbandry tasks
    • Periodic maintenance projects for all animal enclosures
    • Meticulous record keeping and communication with the Naturalist team
  • Daily husbandry care for program ambassador raptors, which includes:
    • Food prep - being able to handle dead rodents, rabbits, and chicks.
    • Maintaining the Raptor Center facility which includes removing mutes, raking, carrying water buckets, and the use of basic power tools.
    • Meticulous record keeping and communication with the Naturalist team
    • Working with the birds in protected contact for choice-based behaviors 

Compensation Information

Full Time, 40 hours/week, typically Sunday-Thursday 8 am-4:30 pm
Rate of Pay: $20.45 per hour
