A fun and dynamic seasonal opportunity for those who love working with children outdoors, Naturalist Aides primarily assist with summer nature camps, field trips, and public events throughout the Lorain County Metro Parks, as well as helping care for our reptile and amphibian animal ambassadors.

Summary

Description: 

Naturalist Aides assist in educating the public and conducting programs including children's nature camps, field trip lessons, nature walks, special events, and front desk reception at the Nature Center. They also assist with the care of animal ambassadors including feeding and cleaning the enclosures of reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Naturalist aides must work well in a team environment with park staff and volunteers, represent the park district in a positive manner, and communicate well with park visitors and program participants. 

Duration & Hours: 

This position begins in May and ends in August with the option of extending part-time into the fall. Weekly hours range from 20-39, with most weeks in June and July requiring 39 hours per week, including some weekends days and evenings. Schedule can be flexible to accommodate college students in the Spring and Fall semesters. 

Location: 

Variable. Naturalist Aides will be based out of the French Creek Nature Center in Sheffield Village but will be assigned to various parks throughout the Lorain County Metro Park District for summer camps and events.

Requirements

Completion of secondary education (high school diploma or GED). 

Two years of college in the field of natural resources, education, environmental science or a related field is preferred.

Excellent visitor service, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Experience working with children in a leadership role. 

Experience or interest in caring for live animals such as snakes and turtles.

Availability on weekends and evenings.

Willingness to work outside in all types of weather.

Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. and walk up to 6 miles in a day. 

Ability to regularly travel to parks throughout Lorain County.

Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and complete a background check. 

Lorain County Metro Parks policy prohibits hiring new employees who are tobacco users.

Compensation Information

$12.50 - $15.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.
