The Museum Educator is responsible for implementing the educational programs of the South Dakota Discovery Center. The position is a part of the Programs Department, reporting to Senior Programs Staff, and encompasses the development, planning, organization, and delivery of hands-on STEM programming for youth and community audiences on-site and offsite, locally and around the state.

The position is a part of the Programs Department, reporting to Senior Programs Staff, and encompasses the development, planning, organization, and delivery of hands-on STEM programming for youth and community audiences on-site and offsite, locally and around the state. 

Position Standards

Requirements: 

  • Has completed science coursework at the undergrad level. (Science major not required)
  • Able to/willing to learn how to teach and facilitate science learning through hands-on methods to children and community members. Education coursework is desired but not required.
  • Familiar with the theories and practices of youth and child development e.g. can explain how teaching five year olds differs from teaching middle schoolers.
  • Models a curious, enthusiastic, growth-mindset approach to science and learning.
  • Able to:
    • Travel locally and statewide. 
    • Lift/move 75 lbs.
    • Use Google Workspace and other online tools.
    • Work occasional nights and weekends.
  • Can work independently and collaboratively, being flexible and responsive to opportunities. 
  • Has a driver’s license.

Personal qualities: Enjoys families and children, values science and learning, attentive to detail, visitor-service and team oriented, seeks efficiency, is self-motivated, reliable, trustworthy, has positive disposition. This job is an active position with no two days the same.

Work Hours:  Negotiable. 40 hours per week. 

A hybrid position, approximately 75% on-site and 25% remote. Typical hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm, depending on programming, and may include nights or weekends.

Compensation Information

Compensation:  Starting at $17 per hour, depending on experience and qualification. Paid vacation and sick leave, benefits stipend, insurance, and retirement plan options. We offer opportunities for personal and professional growth.
