The Interpretation and Education Program Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day educational programming and interpretive experiences with visitors in the park. The department’s objective is to inspire awareness and stewardship in natural resources through conservation education and interpretation. This position supervises approximately 2 full-time employees and 11 seasonal employees while providing oversight of any educational programming on or associated with Grandfather Mountain.

  • Bachelor of Science or Arts in biology, education, management, environmental science, or related fields.
  • At least 3 years of related working knowledge and/or experience.
  • Leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, adapt to change, and to prioritize effectively.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude.
  • Knowledge of implementing and presenting educational programs, preferably in natural sciences.
  • Ability to make decisions in emergency situations.
  • Comfortable handling live animals.
  • Have reliable transportation.
  • Experience with exhibit design/maintenance, working with interns and volunteers, and/or program evaluation/assessment preferred.
  • Flexible work schedule. Must be able to work weekdays, weekends, nights and holidays.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for hiring, training and supervision of seasonal employees and interns and within the department using established guidelines.
  • Plans the work schedules of the I & E staff.
  • Assesses budgetary needs of I & E staff and works with the Director to request any additional annual needs.
  • Plans and schedules training sessions and participates in the implementation to full-time and seasonal staff.
  • Establishes guidelines and work procedures and serves as a model for other employees in the department.
  • Responsible for reviewing and approving educational and interpretive programs.
  • Assists the Group Host in scheduling, preparing itineraries and implementation of post-assessment surveys for visiting groups.
  • Responsible for inputting data into a statistical report for all park programming and informal experiences.
  • Provides qualitative and quantitative evaluation and feedback data regarding the effectiveness of programming.
  • Responsible for special event planning: including Rhododendron Ramble, Junior Ranger Day, Girl Scout Day, and Fall Color Ramble.
  • Takes a lead in ensuring excellent visitor service is demonstrated department wide.
  • Prepares and presents curriculum based educational programs to students (pre-K through adult) when necessary.
  • Prepares and presents daily interpretive programs such as guided hikes and interpretive talks when necessary.
  • Oversees the creation of non-personal interpretive media such as handouts, exhibits and guidebooks.
  • Operates a variety of audiovisual and other equipment in connection with programs or exhibits.
  • Roves park trails and visitor areas to provide informal interpretation and customer service.
  • Distributes maps and brochures, informs visitors of potential safety hazards or closures, and provides directions and routes of travel through the park.
  • Serves as a frontline representative of the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation.
  • Assists in research activities such as bird point counts, salamander inventories and plant data collection as needed.
  • May serve as a parking attendant in various capacities.
  • Responsible, as all employees are, for maintaining scenic, litter-free grounds within the park.
  • Other duties will be assigned as necessary.

Compensation Information

Hiring range is from $41,600-$43,680 annually depending on skill and experience
