Field Instructor

BACKGROUND: Earth Discovery Institute (EDI) is a non-profit organization that inspires stewardship of San Diego’s native biodiversity through environmental education and conservation. Our educational programs and outdoor recreation events primarily serve communities in San Diego’s east county. One of our main flagship programs provides outdoor education for 4th graders and introduces these students to their watershed by exploring Crestridge Ecological Reserve in El Cajon and San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Chula Vista. There, students conduct experiments as scientists and discover the interconnections between humans and the natural world, and learn how to become advocates for a healthier watershed. We also facilitate special outdoor recreational events for families to increase their access to nature.

DUTIES: Field Instructors will work with EDI’s Education Director and Education Coordinator to support programs and events. Responsibilities include:

• Participating in paid program training
• Leading groups of elementary-aged children on outdoor field trips, primarily at Crestridge Ecological Reserve and San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and other locations as needed
• Supporting special outdoor educational and recreational activities for families of all ages
• Facilitating classroom lessons as needed
• Carrying out other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS: This is an entry-level position for someone with at least 1 year of experience working with youth. A passion for environmental education and working with children is essential. Applicants should be comfortable working outdoors, in classrooms, and in virtual settings. The ideal candidate would be able to lead diverse groups of students through a series of science/environmental-themed activities and a guided hike on an ecological reserve/open space. Training and curriculum materials are provided, but some knowledge of local native/non-native plants, animals, and ecosystems is helpful. Ability to follow standards-based lesson plans and adjust them to varying student abilities is also very helpful. Reliable transportation and flexible weekday availability are required. Successful applicants must undergo Live Scan fingerprinting and complete a background check. First Aid/CPR certification is also required but can be provided by EDI, if necessary. A bachelor’s degree in education, conservation, or a related field is beneficial, but not required. Familiarity with national and state education standards (NGSS) and inquiry-based learning concepts is a plus, but not required.

HOURS: The position involves approximately 0–20 hours of work per week over the course of the 2023-24 school year. Schedule is variable but field trips generally take place on weekdays 9:00am–1:00pm, 1–3 days/week. There is a possibility of additional hours to support other programs and events. We have several special Family Day recreation events throughout the year that Field Instructors help support, and these events most typically occur on Saturdays.
