Key Responsibilities & Duties
• Assist in the supervision of the education summer interns.
• Deliver the SeaQuest school program for schools in Monmouth County.
• Run the Beach Grasses in Classes program and the community beach grass planting projects in Monmouth County.
• Lead Close Encounters with the Coast fee-based field trips with schools, scout groups, and home-school families on Sandy Hook. Maintain customer relationships and train and supervise interns to lead program.
• Design and lead nature trips and walks for the public on Sandy Hook.
• Assist with coordinating and leading private corporate events including beach clean-ups and dune grass plantings.
• Deliver educational presentations to key partners.
• Identify and staff opportunities for outreach at events throughout New Jersey.
• Develop educational programs in collaboration with the Director of Education.
• Work with the Communications Manager to publicize all educational opportunities and maximize attendance at all events.
• Maximize opportunities to recruit new members at educational events.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Competencies

  • Associates/Bachelors degree or relevant experience in education. Candidates should have a background in marine biology, coastal ecology, wildlife biology, landscape architecture, and/or restoration ecology.
  • 1-2 years of experience in educational outreach and/or environmental ecology educational programs with understanding of ecological principles and how to convey to a variety of audiences.
  • Understanding of program objectives and the ability to integrate those objectives with school curriculum, in-class/field presentations, and volunteer events.
  • Proven ability to work with youth groups and groups of 30 or more.
  • Experience in coordinating volunteers and project-related events.
  • Computer knowledge - familiarity with MS Office suite is required.
  • The work requires some manual labor; must be able to lift 35lbs, bend, twist, walk long distances, and enter streams/water bodies.
  • Must also be comfortable working near various forms of wildlife.
  • Must enjoy sharing their enthusiasm for the littoral zone with people from all age groups and walks of life. 
  • Demonstrated ability in successful multi-tasking and coordination with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and excellent written/verbal communication skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and have willingness/ability to travel locally and/or statewide.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and up-to-date car insurance. This position will require the use of personal vehicle and laptop.

This position is part-time, and hours are flexible with some evening and weekends required. For the right candidate, the position may extend to full-time in the future, depending on available funding. This is an excellent opportunity to work with a well-established organization that promotes coastal conservation through education, restoration, and advocacy.

The Littoral Society pays $20/hour at an estimated 25 hours per week based upon experience and education and seeks someone who can begin work in June 2023. Housing is not available. Must be located within reasonable distance of Highlands, NJ.

Compensation Information

$20/hour
