Summary
Organization: The Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee (MRC) is an advisory group to the Board of County Commissioners and part of the regional Northwest Straits Marine Conservation Initiative. The MRC comprises largely of volunteer members who work with local and regional partners to protect and restore the marine and nearshore environments of East Jefferson County. Position Overview: The Crabber Outreach Coordinator will support outreach efforts, providing education to recreational crabbers on best practices for sustainable harvesting. This is a part-time, paid internship with 240 billable hours. Work hours and times will vary depending on event needs, including some weekends and evenings. The Crabber Outreach Coordinator will be paired with an MRC mentor who will oversee and assist them in the completion of their tasks. There will be opportunities to help with additional MRC projects and field work as available. It is our goal that by the end of their term, the Crabber Outreach Coordinator will have gained valuable job skills, problem solving abilities and diverse experiences that prepare them for the next step in their career.
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Assist with organizing one in-person or hybrid crabber education workshop, including scheduling speakers, creating and sharing promotional materials, and providing logistical support during the workshop
• Conduct outreach alongside MRC members and/or WDFW staff at local boat ramps during opening weekend of the recreational crab season and at the annual Jefferson County Search and Rescue crab pot sale
• Assemble and distribute crabber education packets at key locations across East Jefferson County
• Support outreach on the invasive European green crab, with opportunity to help with a local trapping effort
• Opportunity to help WA Department of Fish and Wildlife staff assess data collected from crabber quizzes and/or gear sweeps
• Assess similar crabber outreach efforts of partner programs to inform future outreach
• Prepare a short presentation to share what you learned and accomplished during your internship to be given at the August MRC meeting
• Participate in MRC and NWSC monthly meetings, as available
• Other duties as assigned
Compensation Information
$4,800 (240 billable hours at wage range: $20.00-20.00 per hour), plus mileage reimbursement ($0.655 per mile); No benefits. One hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked.
