The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) seeks a motivated and experienced current student with experience in climate mitigation, clean energy, and/or sustainability, and a strong commitment to equity. The Clean Energy and Climate Intern will advance the work of MAPC’s Clean Energy Department and related climate initiatives across the Greater Boston Region.

MAPC is the Regional Planning Agency (RPA) serving the people who live and work in metropolitan Boston. Our strategic priorities are to promote smart growth, collaboration, climate mitigation and resilience, and equity in the region.  We are guided by our regional plan, MetroCommon2050: Shaping the Region Together. MAPC’s staff includes about 100 full-time employees in downtown Boston in a transit-accessible and bike-friendly office.  

Interns will be working remotely, and will not be expected to come into the office regularly.  Candidates must reside in Massachusetts while they are working remotely.

About the Clean Energy Department 

MAPC's Clean Energy Department provides a range of services to communities, including climate and net zero planning and technical assistance focused on developing and implementing local clean energy and climate plans, policies, and programs. We help with the entire clean energy cycle, from planning through implementation, tracking, and reporting. We ground our work in inclusive community engagement and support communities in centering equity - especially racial equity - in plans, policies, and programs. Our work aims to rapidly drive down greenhouse gas emissions, end dependence on fossil fuel consumption in the Commonwealth, build community resilience, and support a just clean energy transition. 

 

Responsibilities (including but not limited to): 

  • Assist the Clean Energy Department in its work with municipalities to develop equitable plans, policies, and programs to advance renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric vehicles, and other climate goals.   
  • Research, write, prepare, and present reports, briefs, and other materials to relevant stakeholders, including municipal boards, staff, community organizations, and residents. 
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses to help municipalities evaluate and develop strategies to meet their climate and equity goals. 
  • Assist the organization and facilitation of in-person and virtual energy and climate-related forums, events, and workshops. 
  • Support stakeholder engagement including interviews, focus groups, and similar engagement activities. Prepare draft interview protocols, conduct outreach, and summarize findings. 
  • Research content for and draft the department’s monthly climate newsletter. 
  • Other project tasks as assigned based on project needs and the intern’s interests. 

 

Qualifications: 

Candidates must be currently enrolled as a student studying any of the following: clean energy or climate, urban planning, engineering, public policy, architecture, business, or another related field. 

We are seeking an intern to work between 30 and 37.5 hours per week throughout the summer (June – August). 

 

Successful candidates for this position will demonstrate all or most of the following: 

  • Knowledge and understanding of current practices and trends in clean energy, climate mitigation and/or adaptation, climate equity, building decarbonization, electric vehicles, and/or related planning fields. 
  • Demonstrated interest in keeping up to date on emerging and innovative topics within the field. 
  • Strong commitment to addressing issues of social equity, access, and climate justice. 
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with a wide variety of audiences. 
  • Ability to work well independently, as well as collaborate within a team setting. 
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis and interpretation, and communication of results. 
  • Multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and/or cross-cultural experience is a plus. 
  • Interest or experience in climate, energy efficiency, and renewable energy data management and analysis, program models, technologies, and tools are a plus.  
  • A willingness to learn on the job, problem-solve, and infuse creativity into your work.

Compensation Information

Compensation and Benefits: 

This is a paid internship with an hourly rate of $18 - $22 per hour, depending on qualifications. We are seeking an intern to work between 30 and 37.5 hours per week throughout the summer (June – August). To qualify as an intern, individuals must be enrolled in an academic program, provide written verification of their status, and agree to a scheduled end date upon hire. The intern will provide their own laptop or computer for purposes of completing the above work. MAPC has a hybrid schedule, combining time in the office with remote work.
