The Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences (JESS), the flagship journal for the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences, is seeking additional associate editors in the areas listed below. The new associate editors will join an existing team, led by editor-in-chief, Teresa Lloro, with the mission of publishing diverse, interdisciplinary manuscripts that explore the environmental studies and sciences. About JESS

JESS is the official publication for AESS. AESS is an independent faculty-and-student-based professional association in higher education, designed to serve the needs of environmental scholars and scientists who value interdisciplinary approaches to research, teaching, and problem-solving. AESS and JESS provide fora for the advancement of interdisciplinary approaches to the study and teaching of social-ecological systems. A major goal of JESS is to further the professional interests of interdisciplinary environmental researchers and practitioners by promoting scholarship that facilitates communication across disciplinary boundaries—for example, between and among the physical, biological, social sciences, the humanities, and environmental professions. JESS welcomes high quality submissions from environmental scholars and practitioners from across the globe and places a high value on diversity, equity, and inclusion, broadly construed.

Expressions of interest, including a brief CV (3 pages or less) and a short (1 page) cover letter outlining your specific qualifications for the position, should be uploaded to this Google Form no later than April 15, 2024. Please discuss any prior editorial experience, including but not limited to editorial board membership, reviewing expertise, and/or editorial roles such as editing books or journal special issues. Applicants may also explain how their publishing or service record make them a good fit for this position. A doctorate (or other terminal degree in the field) is required, with a preference for 3+ years experience since the terminal degree was issued. Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis and selected associate editors can begin their position upon selection.

Position Description

Associate editors work closely with the editor-in-chief by handling approximately 2-5 manuscripts at any given time, typically up to 12 manuscripts each year. The position requires roughly 2-3 hours of work a week on average. This process involves reading papers to ensure their suitability for an interdisciplinary audience, identifying appropriate referees, coordinating the review process, working with authors on revisions, and – in consultation with the editor-in-chief – making a final decision about publication. Associate editors should have an established background of academic publication, be strong writers, good managers, and ideally have some editorial experience. They must be well organized, able to keep good records, and to use an online submission management system (Editorial Manager), for which we will provide training. Editors should be able to dedicate some time to the journal every few days, rather than allowing tasks to build up. Since JESS is an interdisciplinary journal, associate editors are expected to be somewhat flexible regarding the kinds of manuscripts they handle. Initial appointment will be for two years with possibility for renewal thereafter.
