Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is looking for undergraduate students entering their Junior or Senior year, or recently graduated students with an interest in conservation, ecological restoration, and environmental research for a summer internship. This internship is designed for hands-on environmental work as well as performing research, allowing students to receive university credit hours.
Summary
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Previous coursework in ecology, conservation, natural resource management, plant biology, horticulture, forestry,
entomology, and/or familiarity with local plant and insect species is preferred - Previous coursework, experience, or familiarity with research and monitoring methods is recommended
- Ability to work in a team with other interns and Conservation Staff
- Must be able to work outdoors performing strenuous work in hot and humid weather
- The ability to lift to 25 pounds, move safely over uneven terrain, climb stairs and work frequently outdoors
Primary Activities and Responsibilities:
- Identify native plants and/or pollinating insects
- Monitor field plots to assist with long-term ecological studies
- Invasive species management, along with various removal methods including herbicide application
- Assist or lead an ongoing or pilot research study related to conservation and ecological restoration practices
- Assist best management practices associated with conservation, ecological restoration and natural resource
management including native plant propagation, trail mulching, and assisting staff with daily duties
