TNC’s Volgenau Virginia Coast Reserve (VVCR) team is looking for an intern to continue exploring the cultural history of Brownsville Preserve. Land stewardship history includes the native communities who thrived prior to colonization as well as the African Americans who worked the land after. This position will work to uncover the under documented histories of those enslaved at Brownsville to be shared with the public and provide a unique connection and perspective to people and nature.

Summary

The intern will also have opportunities to work alongside conservation staff that are focused on land protection, migratory birds, marine habitat restoration, and education and community engagement as well as other seasonal staff and interns. Interns will dedicate 5% of their time to professional development activities through STEP.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Mapping family relationships of African Americans at Brownsville
  • Transcribing handwritten notes from primary sources
  • Conducting research to highlight personal narratives of African Americans at Brownsville to enhance the preserve’s cultural history
  • Collaborating with Upshur family descendants to share research as well as record oral histories
  • Connecting with local partners in the Eastern Shore of Virginia Museum Network
  • Sharing research at local tabling events within the community

What You’ll Bring: 

  • Experience and/or interest in African American history and culture
  • Currently enrolled undergraduate, or a recent graduate 
  • Proficiency in learning procedures and adhering to instructions.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Major in Public History or a related field
  • Knowledge of Eastern Shore communities or history
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated
  • Willing to work in an office setting and remotely, if needed, with occasional travel for research
  • Experience with technology as related to public history projects
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
