The primary purpose of this position is to perform professional work to develop and deliver environmental education lessons, programs and events to diverse audiences at the Abington Township Briar Bush Nature Center (BBNC). This position is open until filled.

Summary

Tasks: Developing and teaching hands-on environmental education activities in local preschools, elementary schools, parks, private homes, senior living facilities and other locations; supervising and utilizing volunteers; documenting and reporting all activities including contacts, programs, training and implementation of education activities; responds to the public to answer nature-related questions via phone, electronic communication, and in-person; assistance with developing grants for program support; additional assistance with programs, events and on-site facilities as needed. Interacts with Township Department and related Division employees, the public, governmental, and Township officials in a courteous and professional manner at all times; other related duties
as necessary to support the Township of Abington Briar Bush Nature Center and Parks and Recreation Department.
 

Job Standards: Employee must be able to pass a FBI, DHS Child Line and PA State Police Criminal Background Checks and drug test; must have a valid driver’s license. Employee is always to maintain a professional and cordial manner. Ability to understand instructions; organize and prioritize workload efficiently and effectively; handle personal and confidential information tactfully; communicate orally and in writing. All interpersonal interactions with employees and the public is to be positive, collaborative, respectful and courteous. This is light work requiring carrying up to 50 pounds occasionally; and up to 20 pounds frequently to move objects; work requires reaching at waist level, and performing fine manipulation frequently; standing, walking, lifting, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching at all levels occasionally; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinction in sound frequently; visual acuity (near vision frequently; mid and far vision, depth perception, color perception, and field of vision occasionally) and observing general surroundings and activities frequently. All work performed is to be mistake free and all interpersonal interactions with employees and the public is to be positive, collaborative, respectful and courteous. Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Experience in curriculum development, experience in and knowledge of early childhood and elementary education. Demonstrated knowledge of natural history and natural systems; well organized, detail oriented, with strong communication skills (verbal and written), excellent computer knowledge; enthusiastic, outgoing, flexible, creative, dedicated, positive, team player. Ability to work outdoors in all weather; ability to work with various live animals (snakes, raptors, tarantula, etc.).


Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in education, environmental science or related field, plus a minimum of three years teaching experience (preferably in outdoor education).


Job Location (Place where work is performed): Briar Bush Nature Center, 1212 Edge Hill Rd. Abington, PA 19001 and various other locations as needed.

Compensation Information

Hourly Rate: $16.00/hour
