The Environmental Education Internship is an unpaid learning role for those studying science communication, education, outdoor recreation, and care of disabled wildlife living in sanctuary. This position is an exciting pathway to careers in outdoor leadership, animal care, conservation biology, and education. Note: Internships are unpaid

Summary

Interns provide valuable support to our Education and Outreach Team, animals included! They have the opportunity to change the world every day by connecting our community with nature through educational programming and connections with our ambassadors and natural spaces.

Environmental Education Interns also help out with specialized summer camp programming themed around ecology and wildlife science, lead programs independently from the planning to execution, assist with planning and leading of special events, and learn how to handle ambassadors for programs. To gain even more well-rounded skills, Environmental Education Interns join the Wildlife Care Interns in the clinical department for professional workshops and skills labs, access to our library, and have the added bonus of gaining an official Project Wild Certification!

Environmental Education Interns are also heavily involved in the daily care of our Ambassador Animals! They learn about behavior, nutrition, enclosure maintenance and design, enrichment, and of course, handling!

Interns are expected to work alongside our clinic staff, apprentices, and volunteers. Volunteers and interns work together during shifts to help support staff in animal care, educational programming and daily operations. Many of our volunteers have been with us for a long time and have a diverse background of experience and knowledge!

Eligibility:

Must be 18 years of age or older
College degree or current college student in biology, zoology, education, outdoor recreation/adventure leadership, environmental advocacy, or related track is preferred, but not required. You may be eligible to receive college credit for your internship.
Highly self-motivated
Attention to detail, punctuality, initiative and a strong desire to learn are required
Personal transportation is required
Ability to work in a fast paced environment
Positive attitude and strong work ethic
Tetanus vaccinations are required
Interns must provide their own off-site housing.

Compensation Information

Compensation and Hours:

Internships are unpaid
Full-time interns are required to work 40 hours per week in five 8-hour shifts
- Priority is given to full time applicants
Part-time interns are required to work a minimum of 24 hours per week in three 8 hour shifts.
There is mandatory training the first week of each internship session and we ask that schedules remain open during this time.
