Looking for a way to gain environmental science experience while working in a canoe or kayak? Join the Environmental Education Center education staff assisting and leading canoe and kayak programs!

Summary

General Statement of Work
Under the direction of a full-time Naturalist, assist with canoe and kayak programs while providing the highest level of customer service. Provide program participants with answers to inquiries regarding the environment, ecology, and other related issues. May also provide basic nature interpretation. Paddling programs will take place in various locations including pools, ponds, canals, and rivers and include beginner to intermediate level paddlers.

Duties
1. Assist in all phases of onsite and field paddlesport programs including tours, transportation of gear, preparation of equipment, and routine maintenance.
2. Provide high quality paddlesport instruction that is safe and engaging.
3. Seek to provide participants with a positive outdoor experience while they develop their paddling skills, connect with nature, and recreate.
4. Be a steward of the natural areas in which we travel and adhere to the Seven Principles of Leave No Trace.
5. Assist Lead Naturalist as needed.
6. Present a positive image as a Park Commission representative to all facility users and the public.
7. Follow Park Commission policies and procedures.

Qualifications
Bachelor of Arts or Science degree from an accredited college or institution of higher education, or current enrollment in the field of natural sciences, parks and recreation, or education. Degrees in other fields acceptable provided applicant has experience, training or supplementary education in life sciences. Strong paddling skills and ability to teach in a compassionate manner. Strong leadership abilities in outdoor situations; and ability to understand skill models, assess student skills, and devise
tactics to guide students learning to more closely approximate models. Must complete a mandatory in-house training program. Customer service experience and strong people skills. Creative approach to problem solving. Physically able to lift and load kayaks, canoes, and other paddlesport gear, and to perform water rescues. CPR and First Aid Certification (In-house CPR and First Aid training available), lifeguard certification a plus. Must be able to pass a criminal background check. Must be able to work a
flexible schedule including long days, weekdays, and weekends. Possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record. Applicants must be available to work June - August. Maximum of 275 hours for the season.

Compensation Information

$16.00 per hour. Learn about the field of environmental education, nature, and outdoor programs and activities. Develop communication, planning, teaching and leadership skills. Gain experience working with children and families. Cultivate resume-building qualities/components. Work alongside experience Naturalists in a long-established summer camp environment. Provide a positive education service to local families. Contribute to the health and well-being of families within the community. Housing not provided.
