We are seeking a hard-working, dedicated Adult Education Coordinator to join the Canopy team and grow with us as we aim to accomplish our vision: a day when every resident of the Midpeninsula can step outside to walk, play, and thrive under the shade of healthy trees.

Summary

Position Summary

The Adult Education Coordinator is responsible for Canopy’s adult education programming efforts, ensuring that these programs achieve Canopy’s goals to increase public knowledge about the benefits of trees, to offer opportunities to enjoy trees and nature, to build skills and capacity of residents to plant and steward trees in their community, and to empower people to act in support of the long-term health and growth of the urban forest. The Adult Education Coordinator reports to the Education Director and works in collaboration with the Education Committee. This is a new position and responsibilities may change over time depending on the needs of Canopy. The successful applicant may also have the opportunity to shape the role according to their skills and interests.

 

Schedule

  • Part-time, 20 hours per week position Monday through Friday with some evenings and Saturdays. The successful candidate will work with the Education Director to set their schedule.
  • Hybrid, partially working from home and the office. Expected to attend or conduct Canopy adult education program events, Programs Team meetings, staff get-togethers, and internal meetings in person regularly. In-person presence of this position is important for department cohesion and Canopy’s culture of mutual support.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Adult Education Program Management (90-95%)

  • Lead Canopy’s 9-week long Community Forestry School program, including coordinating Canopy staff and volunteer speakers, reviewing applications, managing communication with students, and serving as the program liaison.
  • Plan workshop(s) and/or webinar(s) as needed, including speaker outreach, scheduling, assistance with content development, and facilitation.
  • Coordinate the Tree Walks program and schedule local arborists, board members, and other community co-leaders to deliver the walks each month. Provide support to identify tree walk locations and recruit attendees.
  • Work with Canopy’s Volunteer Manager and Environmental Educator to coordinate California Arbor Week celebrations in March and Earth Day celebrations in April. 
  • Work with outreach team to develop educational materials on the importance and benefits of trees in communities; work with marketing/communications staff to promote and publicize programs. 
  • Develop new adult education programs and/or events to support Canopy’s Trees Programs and Advocacy Program goals. 
  • Track and report program deliverables for grants and assist with grant proposals and reports that are relevant to Adult Education programs.
  • Use evaluation tools to gather feedback from participants and use Canopy’s database to track and report program outcomes. Adapt programming in response to feedback.
  • Work with the Education Director to identify and use self-reflective tools and exercises for setting personal goals and evaluating professional development as an educator.
  • Attend Education Committee meetings. 
  • Set and track adult education programmatic goals.
  • Engage in department-wide strategic conversations related to upcoming focus areas for Canopy’s education programs.
  • Support the Education Director and other Canopy staff in the design and implementation of tablings, special events, workshops, and presentations, as needed. Serve as the project lead for the development and coordination of some of these tablings, events, workshops, and presentations.

 

Staff-wide Responsibilities (5-10%)

  • Help with Canopy reports (such as City updates) as needed.
  • Help with onboarding/training of new program staff, as needed.
  • Answer staff’s questions on adult education, as needed.
  • Participate as an active member in Canopy’s strategic planning process.
  • Collaborate with the Canopy team on shared goals.
  • Assist with other tasks, as needed. 

 

Requirements

  • 1-3 years experience in education or a related field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills as evidenced by an earnest desire and proven ability to listen to, connect with, and communicate information to people of various backgrounds.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office, Google Apps/Drive, social media, web page development, etc.
  • Ability to represent Canopy to external partners effectively and professionally
  • Passionate about the environment, trees, and environmental justice.
  • Highly organized and adept at prioritizing and executing tasks.
  • Respect for and the willingness to learn about different cultures.
  • Live Scan fingerprinting and TB test before working with youth (Canopy will coordinate this with you).

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Experience reporting and tracking grant deliverables.
  • Knowledge of urban forestry.
  • Lived experience or experience working with untapped communities.
  • Experience working with volunteers on an individual and group basis.
  • Knowledgeable in best practices for inclusive, effective learning design for adults.
  • Experience providing coaching and/or feedback.

Compensation Information

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual salary: starting at $30,000-$31,000 per year
  • Health benefits: Prorated medical/dental/vision insurance
  • Retirement: 401k, with a future possibility of offering employer-matching contributions
  • Sick leave: 6 days (48 hours) per year with a maximum accrual of 6 days per year
  • Vacation time: 6 days (48 hours) per year with a maximum accrual of 9 days per year. Accrual rates increase after two years with Canopy
