Summary
Position Dates: February 26 - November 8, 2024
Field Station Educators lead experiential, environmental education programs for learners of all ages. Educators will primarily work with our Education Department leading school programs, Road Scholar groups, overnight camps, day camps, family programs, and Scout programs. Educators will also have the opportunity to work with outreach and University & Research programs. The primary focus of our programs is coastal and barrier island ecology. Classes and activities include intertidal studies, kayaking, wetland ecology, ornithology/birding, bicycling, coastal botany, barrier island and dune ecology, oceanography research boat trips, and more!
Key Responsibilities
- Function as the primary educator for school programs, summer camps, Road Scholar, and special programs
- Teach learners of all ages (Pre-K through older adult)
- Lead and teach all summer camp classes and assist summer camp counselors with evening activities
- Lead outdoor activities such as hikes, kayak trips, birding excursions, biking, and beach walks
- Responsible for all program set-up, break-down, and maintenance of program areas including labs, equipment, and housing
- Weekly program maintenance tasks as assigned (aquarium maintenance, office and paper work, maintenance of program spaces, cleaning and fueling vehicles, etc.)
- Drive CBFS vehicles including 15 passenger vans and school buses with bike and kayak trailers (Commercial Driver's License will be obtained as part of training)
- Coordinate group check-ins and check-outs with administrative staff
- Enforce and follow CBFS protocols and rules
- Provide excellent customer service to program participants
- Represent CBFS at outreach opportunities and special events
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- Comfortable and able to work long hours outdoors, sometimes in less than ideal conditions
- Teaching and/or leadership experience
- Ability to pass background check to obtain NASA security clearance
- Valid driver's license with 2 or fewer moving violations in the last 2 years and no DUI or DWI charges
- Willing and able to obtain VA CDL Class B
- Current First Aid/CPR or ability to obtain before start date
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching and/or leadership experience in a formal or informal education setting
- Experience teaching multiple age groups from young learners to adults
- Previous experience on boats
- Previous experience leading biking or kayak programs
- Experience with summer camps, outdoor adventure programs, residential programs, or similar
- Degree in related field (education, outdoor rec, marine biology, biology, etc.)

Compensation Information
Pay is $880 bi-weekly
Room + board provided. 2 bed/1 bath apartment, 800sqft, all utilities included, Wi-fi included, max. one roommate. Meals available any time the dining hall is open.
