At outdoor school, fifth grade students from Yakima valley and surrounding areas come to camp for one to four days to participate in hands-on outdoor education programs that make the science concepts they’ve studied in class come to life. Our curriculum is interdisciplinary, state standards-aligned, tactile, and fun—we integrate Indigenous science, Western science, history, writing, art, math, engineering, and social emotional learning into our lessons to help students develop a meaningful, comprehensive vision of our connected world.

As an outdoor school naturalist at Camp Dudley, you will lead groups of fifth graders in learning experiences that teach and connect them to nature.

Summary

As an outdoor school naturalist at Camp Dudley, you will lead groups of fifth graders in learning experiences that teach and connect them to nature. During staff training, you will be taught how to lead each learning station, so you won’t teach the same lesson all day every day—there will be a lot of variety!

Room and board is provided. During the work week, you will have a private space in a cabin that is shared with one to two other naturalists. We can accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies. You will have most nights and each weekend off.

You will have a direct and lasting impact on youth throughout each week. Students will remember you and the concepts you introduced them to for years to come.

Job Description:

A naturalist shall lead their group of fifth graders in learning experiences that teach and connect them to nature while also supporting their growth in social emotional learning. A naturalist shall also lead large group activities and/or assist in assigned program areas. Naturalists impact youth throughout the week to support camp values, and they will inspire a connection to natural surroundings and a desire to solve our resource problems.

Naturalists will work with teachers to deliver pre-formed natural science lessons that also incorporate Indigenous history, math, art, and writing skills. Camp Dudley will provide staff training at the beginning of the season. All lessons will be taught through hands-on learning experiences. Naturalists will also learn to lead rock climbing, team-building, and other adventure activities. Naturalists will have every other evening off duty. Fifth graders will be at camp for extended day programs, one-night/two-day programs, and two-night/three-day programs. Fifth grade students will have high school counselors or parent chaperones staying in cabins and going to learning stations with them.
