As part of the Orange County Department of Education, Inside the Outdoors has been a leader in environmental education since 1974. We run environmental education field trips and also offer Traveling Scientist programs, where an ITO educator brings environmental science to the classroom through hands-on programs.
We are recruiting a talented individual to serve as as a new Program Naturalist. This full-time position will deliver Traveling Scientist classroom programs in schools across Orange County, CA.

Summary
The selected candidate will:
- Teach Traveling Scientist programs independently at school sites across Orange County;
- During field trips, organize part-time field educators, greet and orient teachers and chaperones, teach field trips, and ensure that programs run on time and that ITO policies and safety procedures are followed;
- Set up and maintain program supplies and equipment;
- Assist with Field Naturalist training and coaching;
- Drive OCDE vehicles to school sites and field locations and perform driver-level safety checks and maintenance of vehicles; and
- Handle, transport, and care for a variety of live animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods, including arachnids.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in biology, ecology, earth systems science, education, or a related field.
- One (1) year of experience working with school aged children in an organized environmental education program or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Experience working and collaborating with diverse communities is strongly desired.
- Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under OCDE’s vehicle insurance policy.
- Must obtain valid CPR and First Aid certifications.

Compensation Information
This is a full-time, ten month classified position that typically works from September - June (similar to a classroom teacher) and receives year-round benefits.
Compensation and benefits include:
- Classified Range 35: $3,826.00 - $5,024.00 Monthly (10 month position)
- 10 paid sick days annually
- 10 vacation days annually
- Generous health benefits for employee and dependents
- Employee plus employer contributions into CalPERS or CalSTRS
