OSPREY Camp, located in Olympia Washington, is seeking a Camp Director. OSPREY Camp (Opportunities for Stewardship Promoting Respect for the Environment and Youth) is an outdoor school designed to provide students with hands-on learning and application of natural science and conservation concepts while living together in the outdoors. The Camp Director works closely with school and district administrators, as well as 5th & 6th grade teachers who bring their students to camp.

Summary


The Camp Director will need to have strong skills in building relationships, ensure the success of the students, high school Mentors, classroom teachers, and camp staff. The Camp Director will ensure the mission of OSPREY Camp is carried out through all aspects of the program. This position reports directly to the Camp Solomon Schechter Executive Director. *OSPREY Camp is a secular outdoor education program run by Camp Solomon Schechter.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, monitor, and, as warranted, modify short- and long-term strategic goals for the growth and development of the OSPREY Camp program in conjunction with the Executive Director and Board of Directors;
  • Work and communicate with the Executive Director, Director of Operations, OSPREY Camp staff, work across all departments, and the larger community to ensure continuity of programming to best achieve the program mission;
  • Year-round leadership, administration, and oversight of the OSPREY camp program;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with public and private schools and school districts;
  • Seasonal staff recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision;
  • Program development;
  • Marketing and public relations management in conjunction with the Executive Director and Director of Development;
  • Oversee all special needs of students and staff, including medical and psycho-social;
  • Ensure responsible procurement of all supplies and materials;
  • Direct oversight of year-round program budget;
  • Identify and provide solutions to complex issues and concerns in a professional manner, including conflict management with parents, teachers, students, and district officials, offering creative and flexible approaches to problem-solving; and
  • Provide ongoing charismatic and dynamic support and leadership to colleagues, camp staff, and leadership, serving as a positive role model for all.

Qualifications

  • Minimum BA from an accredited college or university, with MA or above preferred;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in directing youth programs and/or camps in a day or overnight setting;
  • Knowledge of program development and educational methodologies, with a specific understanding of outdoor education and programming;
  • Knowledge and commitment to “best practices” in the camping field; 
  • Onsite, 24 hours/day, when Mentors, students, and teachers are present – lodging and meals provided; 
  • Possesses excellent communication and time management skills, able to work independently and in groups;
  • Self-motivated, focused, resilient, compassionate, nurturing, enthusiastic, and loves working with kids and teenagers;
  • Passion for collaborating with underserved communities with a lens of equity & inclusion;
  • Ability to travel to schools in the greater Puget Sound area – mileage reimbursed; and
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written.

Essential Functions (Physical)

  • Lift and carry up to 50lbs and move heavy materials across camp facilities.
  • Consistently work in both indoor facilities and outdoor adverse weather conditions.
  • Maintain a high level of energy and excitement despite strenuous activity (hiking, working long hours, etc.)
