The Hitchcock Center for the Environment is looking for a full time environmental educator to join our innovative and unique education team. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, passionate, and interested in being a part of growing our high quality environmental education programming at our Living Building.

Summary

Responsibilities include:

  • Design and teach education programs both in the classroom, outdoors, and in afterschool settings
  • Work with the Education Manager and Director to develop and implement education programs that advance the Center’s mission, vision and values
  • Develop, plan, and teach 2-3 school-based residency programs
  • Direct February and April school vacation weeks for children grades K-6
  • Supplement summer camp programs
  • Lead outdoor environmental education programming
  • Facilitate unstructured play outdoors
  • Ensure a safe and positive outdoor play experience
  • Support social-emotional development through appropriate risk-taking and team-building activities
  • Foster a deep connection to the natural world
  • Mentor a college intern assistant
  • Lead field trips for elementary aged school children
  • Provide inquiry-based instruction on a wide range of science topics for school groups, grades preK-6
  • Conduct other children and family programs as-needed

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, biology, environmental education, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum five years of environmental education experience in both informal and classroom settings
  • The desire to educate diverse audiences and share our commitment to dismantling white supremacy and a commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion work.
  • Proven abilities in designing, writing, and evaluating environmental education curricula, lesson plans and activities
  • Must have a deep passion for working with children and commitment to the Hitchcock Center’s mission, vision and values
  • Working knowledge of informal and formal education theory and practice, including program development and evaluation
  • Have excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Must be people oriented, have a team-focused attitude, and the ability to professionally represent Hitchcock Center to the public
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to and from schools with teaching materials
  • Be comfortable leading outdoor activities in a variety of weather conditions.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to: explore and keep children safe, navigate a variety of outdoor habitats and terrains outdoors, be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Compensation Information

Compensation Range: $20-23/hr depending prior experience and qualifications. This position is full time (30-40 hours per week) with a weekday schedule. The total compensation package includes health insurance and generous paid time off benefits.
