Horizons seeks instructors for the newly reopened Hemlock Overlook Regional Park to empower the people of the Washington, DC, region to challenge themselves, grow together, and learn about the wonders of the outdoor world. Together, we will create powerful, memorable experiences while managing risk and encouraging positive learning outcomes for teams. Outdoor instructors form the heart and soul of our program!

Summary

Successful applicants for Outdoor Learning Instructor will join an enthusiastic, close-knit team that strives to enrich the lives of participants. We aim to hire several instructors for fall 2023 to lead groups on the team development course at Hemlock Overlook, with opportunities to return to learn additional skills in environmental education and adventure programming in spring 2024.

Ideal candidates have strong people skills; enthusiasm for working outside with youth and teens; and backgrounds in camp, outdoor recreation, classroom teaching, or environmental education programs. We also look for candidates who see employment with us as a natural step towards a career in outdoor and environmental education or traditional classroom education.

Qualifications

1-year outdoor recreation experience or camp counselor preferred

Must have completed or be in the process of completing an undergraduate degree or have commensurate work experience.

First aid and CPR certified or ability to earn within 30 days of employment.

Required skills

Must have the status to work legally in the United States.

Good driving record and ability to drive a 15-passenger van (training provided)

Preferred skills

Experience working with children preferred

Must have experience or comfort with outdoor education, recreation activity, and adventure programs.

Horizons at Hemlock Overlook brings four decades of experience delivering excellent outdoor learning and team development experiences to a unique meeting and retreat venue—400 acres of quiet, beautiful woods just 30 miles west of downtown Washington, DC. We are part of Endless Horizons, with several outdoor education venues in Virginia as well as West Virginia.

Compensation Information

$105-$120 depending on experience and certifications.

We also have onsite housing.
