Summary
The Outreach Program Manager supervises the Arboretum's Education unit and reports to the Director. Currently, the Education unit includes six permanent staff and 15 limited term naturalists. These individuals work collaboratively with each other and the rest of the Arboretum staff to foster the Arboretum mission -- "We conserve and restore Arboretum lands, advance restoration ecology, and foster the land ethic" -- by cultivating ecological knowledge and literacy; promoting engagement and learning through citizen-science, inquiry-based, and experiential teaching techniques; and developing materials and exhibits. The unit creates and offers programs that are science-based, accessible, meaningful, and responsive to diverse audiences and communities, addressing the realities of a changing world. Our teaching and outreach targets broad audiences at the Arboretum as well as in the community and reaches beyond our national borders. While the normal workweek is Monday-Friday, this position will include some evenings and weekends for public programs. As a supervisor at the UW-Madison Arboretum, at least 80% of the workweek will be on-site with an initial period of 100% on-site time.
The Outreach Program Manager works closely with the communication manager to provide updated content for Arboretum print and digital publications, with the volunteer coordinator to foster the engagement of volunteers in educational activities, and with the land care and research managers to incorporate Arboretum land care and research activities into educational programming.
Key responsibilities include:
-Establish a clear vision and strategy for the Arboretum's education programming
-Develop and oversee plans for education activities (public and private tours, classes, programs, workshops, and exhibits) that serve multi-cultural and multi-generational audiences
-Evaluate and strengthen existing education offerings, based on vision and goals.
-Build and nurture external partnerships
-Work with the development manager and director to secure funding for educational programs through grant-writing and donations
-Supervise, encourage, and evaluate the performance of Arboretum staff direct reports
-Oversee a cross-unit team to support the Arboretum visitor experience, including developing and updating interpretive signage and Visitor Center exhibits
-Develop, maintain, and promote positive and professional relationships with Arboretum staff, UW-Madison faculty, volunteers, donors, practitioners, and the general public
-Embody the Wisconsin Idea by engaging neighborhoods, community-based organizations, and the public
