Education and Outreach Associate - Americorps/WCC Individual Placement

Position Description:

This Washington Conservation Corps AmeriCorps Individual Placement position serves with North Olympic Salmon Coalition (NOSC), a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote robust wild salmon stocks for families, fishers, and local economies by furthering habitat restoration and education on the North Olympic Peninsula. NOSC is a Regional Fisheries Enhancement Group and is designated by the State of Washington to assist with salmon recovery efforts within our region, which is from the Hood Canal to Cape Flattery.

This position will include projects both in the office and the field. It is our goal that by the end of their term, the Education and Outreach Associate will have gained valuable job skills, leadership skills, problem-solving abilities, and diverse experiences that prepare them for life after AmeriCorps.

This position is primarily based out of our office in Port Angeles, with frequent travel to Jefferson County. The position will also include travel within our region using a state fleet vehicle and/or the applicant’s personal vehicle, reimbursable at the state rate.

Position Responsibilities:

The position responsibilities include an approximate percentage of time spent in each area of the position. We strive to give the Education and Outreach Associate a well-rounded experience by providing an in-depth look into the internal operations of a non-profit and a thorough understanding of salmon recovery in our region.

• Education (October-June 30%) 
  • With guidance from our Education and Outreach Coordinator, teach curriculum-based classroom and field-based lessons for NOSC’s Real Learning Real Work 7th grade STEM program and the Salmon in the Schools elementary education program. 
  • Provide support to the Education and Outreach coordinator in the planning and implementation of the lessons and field trips. Tasks may include recruitment of field trip volunteers, materials prep, and leading student activities. 
• Outreach (All year 35%)
  • With guidance from outreach staff, create digital outreach materials and maintain social media platforms. Serve with the Education and Outreach Coordinator to produce the monthly e-newsletter, update the website, and draft press releases to the media.
  • Represent NOSC at various outreach events including tree plantings, trivia, bingo, festivals, and farmer’s markets.
• Monitoring (October-January 10%)
  • Assist the Stewardship Coordinator in planning and implementing our salmon spawner surveys on Chimacum Creek. Tasks will include training and communication with volunteer surveyors, organization of survey equipment, and data sharing with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the community. 
• Restoration (January-August 25%)
  • Support the Stewardship Coordinator in planning and implementing riparian restoration projects throughout Jefferson and Clallam counties. Tasks may include supporting staff in coordinating volunteer planting events, assisting in planting design, and coordinating with partners.
  • Assist the Stewardship Coordinator in implementing invasive species management on the Dungeness River. Tasks may include landowner outreach and data collection.
  • Assist with maintaining our native plant nursery and coordinating our volunteer nursery stewards.
  • Manage, upkeep, and inventory of planting and restoration tools.
  • Maintain riparian restoration plantings at several sites, including irrigating young riparian plants.
