Summary
The Outreach Programs Manager develops and delivers outreach programs for diverse audiences such as schools, libraries, assisted living facilities, clubs, and community organizations. This position serves as the lead educator for zoomobiles, community events, and conservation projects. The Outreach Programs Manager also teaches onsite programs as needed. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and drive zoo vehicles on a regular basis. Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Principal Duties:
- Develop, teach, and evaluate outreach programming for schools and community sites in and around Duluth.a. Present live animals in the ambassador animal collection to a variety of audiences. i. Follow appropriate methods and protocols for handing small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and birds. ii. Assist with socializing, training, and husbandry of ambassador animals on a regular basis. iii. Be comfortable working with all species including snakes, spiders, and birds of prey. b. Coordinate outreach supplies and materials, including requests for vehicle maintenance. c. Drive zoo vehicles and follow safety policies for operating vehicles and transporting animals.
- Take reservations for outreach programs. a. Communicate with groups to schedule and invoice education programs. b. Schedule staff coverage for programs. c. Ensure accuracy of program calendars, databases, and reports of program participation. d. Obtain permits for programs taking place in Wisconsin.
- Collaborate with the Education Programs Manager and other appropriate staff to conduct onsite programs.a. Teach school programs, guided tours, homeschool classes, and day camps as needed. b. Engage with zoo visitors to ensure a positive and educational experience. c. Provide continuing education to adult and teen volunteers. d. Occasional substitute teaching in the Zoo Preschool.
- Develop new family and community engagement activities focused on conservation action. Collaborate with external partners and build relationships with families to expand the reach and impact of the zoo’s mission.
- Contribute to a positive team atmosphere through the coordination of work with colleagues, volunteers, other departments, and community partners. a. Work with education team to identify and address departmental goals. b. Assist with training and supervising seasonal staff, interns, and volunteers. c. Work with education team to refine best practices for fostering empathy and conservation action and integrate them more fully into programs and zoo-wide norms. d. Participate in professional development to stay informed of new trends and topics and share that knowledge with colleagues. e. Attend meetings and actively participate on committees as needed. f. Represent the zoo in a professional manner.

Compensation Information
Starting wage: $16.00/hr.
