Summary

The San Diego County Office of Education is seeking a highly motivated, Outdoor Education Teacher to join our amazing team at the original 6th Grade Camp, Cuyamaca Outdoor School. The residential outdoor education program is located an hour east of San Diego in the 25,000-acre Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, elevation 4,000 feet. We connect children to science through nature in a weeklong, hands-on outdoor education experience. Camp Teachers are outgoing, hard-working, energetic, and have a genuine desire to make a positive difference in children’s lives. 

Position Details:

The Outdoor Education Teacher will provide program leadership for one of the three villages that consist of 120 students, eight classified instructors, two overnight cabin leaders, and four visiting classroom teachers. This Position will be developing curriculum and training instructional staff and is a part of the leadership team.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists and collaborates with outdoor education staff in the design, development, and delivery of all assigned projects or programs.
  • Develops curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Oversees staff training on subjects such as biology, ecology, astronomy, and conservation; student living activities such as showers, cabin time, meals, and during rest periods.
  • Assures the health, safety, and welfare of students; assists in behavior management; works effectively with students who are homesick and other support services.
  • Works in cooperation with staff, administration, and other department personnel to establish an effective outdoor education program.
  • Trains and coaches camp staff on: positive behavior interventions; establishing and maintaining positive and appropriate student relationships; positive reinforcement; student supervision; and other relevant training relating to student safety and behavior.
  • Facilitates a regular communication format among outdoor education staff, visiting classroom teachers, camp nurse, child nutrition supervisor and overnight staff to report and receive pertinent information regarding students’ health, behavior, and safety.
  • Oversees and maintains the daily operations of a camp village(s) which includes: approximately 144 students and 8 instructional staff members.
  • Attends, conducts, and participates in meetings, trainings, and other staff in-service trainings.
  • Establishes and maintains open communication with visiting school administrators, teachers, camp staff, principal, and office staff.
  • Supervises students during instructional, recreational, mealtime, activities, and during cabin hours as needed.

Compensation Information

Salary and Compensation Plan:

Outdoor Education Teacher Compensation Plan: $295.42 - $523.68 daily rate / $56,129 - $99,499 annually.  190 days per year, hours vary per day an could include some evenings.

This position is full-time and will offer the certificated benefits package, which includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage, and will participate in the CalSTRS state retirement system.
