Fall Naturalist Interns at MacArthur Beach State Park will gain experience and skills in leading and implementing place-based, hands-on environmental education programs for ages 6-17, park interpretation, social media and communications, and field work. Interns will also gain an understanding of nonprofit organizations and state park management while learning about the history, biodiversity, and ecosystems of John D. MacArthur Beach State Park.

Summary

At the Friends of MacArthur Beach State Park (FMBSP), full time Fall Naturalist Internship positions are offered that provide the opportunity to gain invaluable professional development and experience working in a state park setting.

John D. MacArthur Beach State Park was established in 1989, the only state park in Palm Beach County. The State Park was established to protect a diverse and undisturbed subtropical coastal habitat from development. The Park is named for John D. MacArthur, whose generosity allowed the State of Florida to secure the land. Developed in part with funds donated by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Park opened to the public in 1989. The purpose was and is still today, to protect a very rare and spectacularly beautiful piece of Florida’s southeast coast.

 

The Naturalist Intern will gain experience in and develop an extensive knowledge of:

  • Implementing Environmental Education Programs to 1st – 12th grade students
  • Best practices for environmental education and working with children ages 6-17
  • Public Speaking and Leadership
  • Local Flora/Fauna of park ecosystems
  • Florida Park Service regulations, procedures, and policies
  • Learning about park interpretation and interpreting for the public
  • An understanding of nonprofit organizations and state park management
  • Creation of social media and communications materials

 

Start Date: August 28, 2023

End Date: December 15, 2023 (flexible)

 

Position Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in environmental education, biology, environmental science, ecology, or a related field
  2. Must be able to work full time (40 hours/week)
  3. Must be able to lift and carry objects and materials up to 50 lbs.
  4. Must be able to safely navigate natural unimproved terrain and ensure the safety of program participants
  5. Must be able to consistently work in an outdoor setting with extreme weather conditions including but not limited to: hot, sunny, humid, rainy, and/or cold days
  6. Must know, respect, and follow safety policies and procedures given by the Director of Education
  7. Ability to communicate with students that are neurodivergent, differently-abled, English language learners, and/or may require behavior management; must be able to meet the learning needs of all students

 

Naturalist Intern Qualifications:

  • Desire to teach children and adults in an outdoor setting
  • Enthusiasm and dedication to learn and master curriculum
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient computer skills: Microsoft Office, Google Apps
  • Professional, well-organized, and safety conscious
  • Team player who is able to take on leadership roles and responsibilities
  • Ability to deal professionally, effectively, and courteously with employees, volunteers, and the public
  • Flexible in working hours and available for weekend and/or evening hours and special events

 

Housing: Available on site, shared

Compensation: $450.00 biweekly stipend

Compensation Information

Housing: Shared housing is available on site at MacArthur Beach State Park. Resident interns will have access to a dock on the intracoastal waterway and staff kayaks. 

Compensation: $450.00 biweekly stipend
