North Cascades Institute seeks a qualified, enthusiastic professional to become a member of our Operations team at the Environmental Learning Center. Responsibilities included maintenance and repairs on buildings, equipment and furnishings as needed; maintain inventory of equipment, supplies and parts as assigned; perform routine grounds keeping. Benefits include paid time off, medical/dental, and retirement. Review of applications will begin immediately. An employee who successfully works for one month of employment from their start date will be eligible for a $500 Sign On Bonus. If the employee works until the end of Fall 2023 programming on December 15, 2023, they will be eligible for a $1500 Season Completion Bonus.

Summary

Summary of Position

North Cascades Institute seeks a qualified, enthusiastic professional to become a member of our  Operations team at the Environmental Learning Center. Based at the Institute’s campus in the North Cascades National Park on Diablo Lake, this position assists with facilities for the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center, which may serve up to 92 children and/or adults per day on a seven-day-a-week schedule, up to ten months a year. Supervised by the Facilities Manager, this position works closely with all other staff, partners and contractors to support a wide array of  educational programs. This is a full time, year-round, nonexempt position.

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Enthusiasm for the mission of the North Cascades Institute.
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in general facilities maintenance.
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks with exemplary time management skill and strong attention to detail.
  • Comply with a campus smoke- and drug-free work environment.
  • Possess excellent mechanical aptitude, problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work and walk over uneven terrain.
  • Use and maintain equipment properly as trained.
  • Ability to climb and work on a variety of ladders.
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Ability and willingness to work with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and ages.
  • Commitment to building a work environment that is welcoming and inclusive to all.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to accommodate a varied work schedule including weekend work.
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment and to work independently and reliably.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, carpentry and light metal fabrication.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and walk over uneven terrain.
  • Ability to model safe work habits and follow risk management practices.
  • Willing to work outdoors in all weather.
  • Successful completion of a background check that may include employment history, national criminal background check, national sex offender registry search and a driving history check.
  • Valid driver’s license and driving record check must have no more than one moving violation in the past three years, no DUI, reckless driving or serious moving violations, etc.

Preferred:

  • First Aid/CPR/WFR training.
  • Experience leading volunteers in service projects.
  • Experience with recycling, composting, waste handling and snow plowing.

 

Housing

Good quality housing is available through the Institute for $350/month, considerably below market rates. Private rooms in shared houses are sometimes available, but not guaranteed. In some cases, roommates in shared rooms may be required, at $175/month. The Institute has housing available in Marblemount or at the Learning Center on Diablo Lake. Pets are not allowed in the Institute’s campus housing, but a few rooms in a Marblemount house allow for pets. Smoking is not allowed in housing, during programs, or on the Institute’s campus.

Compensation Information

Compensation

This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position. The wage is $21.00-$23.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Bonus - North Cascades Institute is pleased to offer bonuses for this Facilities Maintenance Technician position. An employee who successfully works for one month of employment from their start date will be eligible for a $500 Sign On Bonus. Benefits - We offer a competitive compensation package. Benefits include the following:

  • Sick Leave – 8 hours per month.
  • Vacation Leave – 10 days per year one. Positions with furloughs may accrue less than 10 days.
  • Holiday Leave – 12 days maximum per year.
  • Service Days – 2 days per year.
  • Other paid time-off such as family leave, pregnancy leave, bereavement leave, etc.
  • Medical/dental insurance, long and short-term disability insurance, tax-deferred annuity, and contribution retirement plan.
  • Yearly stipend to participate in Institute programs.

Benefits are prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week.
