Are you passionate about outdoor education and science? Do you enjoy working with 6th grade students in a residential camp setting? If so, we have the perfect job for you! Cuyamaca Outdoor School Is looking for Outdoor Education Interns to join our dynamic team. As an Instructional Intern, you will be trained in the world of outdoor education and take students on hikes through the beautiful wilderness of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, teaching them about the local flora and fauna, geology, and ecology. You will lead hands-on science lessons, facilitate team building activities, and help students develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Summary

Cuyamaca Outdoor School is a training ground for those interested in the field of Outdoor Education or Environmental Education. Naturalist Interns will grow under the guidance of our experienced permanent Outdoor Education Specialists, Village Leaders, and Head Teachers, learning a variety of classes, activities, and skills. Over the six-month internship, interns will teach science classes, local natural history lessons, team building activities, as well as learn how to belay and facilitate archery instruction. Interns receive training in all classes before they teach on their own.

Additionally, paid training is provided throughout the year in areas including; educational theory, classroom and group management, background in relevant sciences, outdoor skills, and local natural history.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of natural and environmental sciences
  • Works effectively with students and adults in small and large group settings
  • Experience working in a residential outdoor education or recreation program or with school-age children
  • Has a passion for teaching in and about the natural world
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude, adaptable personality, strong work ethic, and likes to have fun
  • Completion of college-level course work in natural sciences or other related topics

Compensation Information

Position/Compensation Details:

The Intern position will start on September 1, 2023, with a starting hourly rate of $15.50. In addition to the rate, the position also includes paid training, room and board, paid AEOE training, as well as other benefits. The paid internship will be for six months, and upon successful completion of the internship, the opportunity for a limited term position for the rest of the school year will be offered with a pay raise to $22.71 per hour.
