Save the earth with a local environmental nonprofit in Reno-Tahoe, where the Sierra Nevada Mountains meet the Great Basin Desert! Timeline for Service: September 5th, 2023 through August 9th, 2024.

KTMB practices the sustainability we preach. We rally volunteers to remove tons of litter from our public spaces, empower our community to stop the spread of invasive weeds, teach kids to protect our watershed, and much more! Our close-knit staff supports AmeriCorps in both fulfilling our shared mission and pursuing their own passion projects (as well as sporting Hawaiian shirts on Fridays).

Summary

KTMB is committed to fostering a safe and supportive work environment for AmeriCorps members to gain relevant experience, learn desired skills, and pursue their passion projects.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist in the enhancement and implementation of community educational presentations, service learning events, community workshops and seminars, and blog posts;
  • Assist in the enhancement and implementation of KTMB’s River Walks every quarter;
  • Maintain and update KTMB’s Recycling Guide database of community recycling resources primarily through bi-annual check-in calls to the participating businesses and researching sustainable diversion outlets for existing and incoming household items;
  • Assist in the certification and recognition of green businesses in Reno and Sparks, primarily through researching sustainable solutions for businesses that enroll in the program and by accurately documenting their progress; 
  • Maintain and develop current relationships with community members and businesses by representing KTMB during community outreach events throughout the year;
  • Assist with other KTMB programs such as the Sensory Garden, Youth Education efforts, Beautification and Clean ups
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Passionate commitment to KTMB’s mission and vision;
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;
  • Exceptional writing skills;
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of environmental science and/or environmental justice;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Flexible schedule for potential weekend work
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, or a related field;
  • Preferred: reading, writing and speaking competency in Spanish language;
  • Required: high degree of initiative, spirit of service, and a sense of humor

Compensation Information

In return for their service, AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance and are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon completion of their terms. For the 2023-2024 AmeriCorps term, the living allowance is $20,000 and the education award is $6,895.

AmeriCorps members are eligible for federal student loan deferment, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance during their service.  After their service, AmeriCorps members are entitled to non-competitive eligibility for hiring with federal agencies.  AmeriCorps Members are eligible to adjust income-driven repayment plans for federal student loans to $0 during service, and service counts toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).

KTMB’s Sustainability Education Coordinator position is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and will serve with AmeriCorps. Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation, a separate nonprofit, is the AmeriCorps consortium responsible for onboarding AmeriCorps Members for KTMB and other local nonprofits.
