An Outdoors Counselor provides a safe, engaging, and fun environment in which campers participate in challenging outdoor activities, develop their confidence personally and as part of a team, and learn about many aspects of outdoor adventure to instill an appreciation of the outdoors. Outdoors counselors may lead camping trips, mountain biking programs, ropes course programs, team building exercises, outdoor cooking, wilderness survival, fire building, navigation, and much more. Outdoors counselors arrive at camp 2 weeks early, to train for leading these activities, and to bond as a team.

Summary

Camps Airy & Louise are brother-sister single-gender camps located in Thurmont, MD and Cascade, MD. Every summer, we host campers ages 7-17, who participate in a diverse range of activities.

Camps Airy & Louise also employ a diverse range of staff members, from around America, the UK, Europe, and Israel. Past counselors describe the job as challenging, yet extremely rewarding. You get to meet people from all over the world, and make a huge positive impact on the lives of your campers. Kids at camp get the opportunity to learn about new cultures, develop new skills, and make friends for life.

Outdoors counselors may lead camping trips, mountain biking programs, ropes course programs, team building exercises, outdoor cooking, wilderness survival, fire building, navigation, and much more. Outdoors counselors arrive at camp 2 weeks early, to train for leading these activities, and to bond as a team.

The main responsibilities of an Outdoors Counselors are:

  • Ensuring camper supervision and safety at all times
  • Helping to develop and facilitate activities in the outdoors department
  • Collaborating with team members to maintain high quality of programming and camper care
  • Maintaining and caring for outdoors equipment
  • Serving as role model to all campers and staff, with a positive attitude, good work ethic, and appropriate behavior

All camp staff live on site, at one of our beautiful camps, for the duration of the position (June 12 - August 13). Room and board are provided. Staff receive 5 days and 5 nights off, plus a mid-summer weekend off. 

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience leading outdoors activities
  • Experience working with kids
  • Experience with ropes course facilitation
  • Ability to communicate with and lead groups of campers of various ages

Compensation Information

Room and Board included. 

Salary starts at $1875 for the contract period. Experienced candidates may negotiate.
