The following is a full-time, temporary, summer position. The hired person will work directly with the Senior Environmental Stewardship Educator(s) and/or Program Director to develop a schedule based on availability and the needs of the organization. The number of hours for the Summer Camp Environmental Educator (Educator) will not exceed 40 hours per week. This position will end in August of 2023.

Summary

The following is a full-time, temporary, summer position. The hired person will work directly with the Senior Environmental Stewardship Educator(s) and/or Program Director to develop a schedule based on availability and the needs of the organization. The number of hours for the Summer Camp Environmental Educator (Educator) will not exceed 40 hours per week. This position will end in August of 2023.

Note: MEarth does not provide on-site housing. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Using MEarth’s facilities to teach K-12th grade environmental stewardship classes

  2. Teaching PK-12th grade students about healthy eating and sustainable lifestyle choices by leading them through the growing and harvesting of foods from our one-acre edible garden

  3. Leading outdoor educational programming, both independently and in partnership with other staff

  4. Leading and/or supporting restoration projects onsite and in local natural areas

  5. Supervising volunteers who support MEarth’s educational programs

  6. Supporting and/or facilitating collaborative programming with guest speakers and community partners

  7. Coordinating daily and weekly program logistics for summer camp

  8. Contributing to lesson plan and curriculum development as needed

  9. Providing additional programming, habitat maintenance, and administrative support as needed

Key Qualifications:

  1. Ability to make outdoor learning and education fun and engaging

  2. Educational background in environmental science, education, and/or related field

  3. Prior experience managing and teaching groups of students in various environments (formal and/or informal, outdoors, indoors, classroom, camp, tutoring, etc.)

  4. Experience and interest in developing and documenting hands-on science and garden-based curriculum for PK-12 grade education programs

  5. Knowledge of local ecological systems

  6. Organic gardening and/or farming experience or a passion to learn

  7. Culinary arts or kitchen experience

  8. Knowledge and direct experience integrating seasonal garden produce into nutrition curriculum,sourcing ingredients, scaling recipes, bulk purchasing, etc.

  9. Demonstrated commitment to providing equity and inclusion in environmental education

  10. Ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced, creative work environment, as well as work independently in a highly organized manner with a keen eye for detail

Additional Beneficial Qualifications:

  1. Experience working in the nonprofit sector

  2. Well-versed in Apple products and Google platforms (Gmail, Google Calendars, Google Drive).

  3. Passion for inspiring youth leadership

  4. Experience working with underserved communities in nutrition and outdoor education

  5. Experience facilitating events/workshops

  6. Experience utilizing impact evaluation tools

  7. Fluency in a foreign language (especially Spanish, French, or Chinese) is a plus

Required Physical Capabilities:

Incorporated with one or more of the essential functions of this position are the following essential physical requirements the ability to:

  • See for purposes of reading instructions, labels, and other printed matter, and for the safe operation of equipment.

  • Hear and understand speech at normal levels in-person and/or on a phone/hand-held radio.

  • Communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation in-person and/or on the phone/radio.

  • Operate a computer, calculator, copier/scanner/printer, phone, hand-held radio, laminator and other office equipment with dexterity and in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Routinely lift and carry supplies and materials weighing up to 25 pounds.

    Working Conditions:

    The working environment is subject to bending, crouching, or kneeling to access information and/or to assist students from ground level to 4.5 feet above the ground, pushing, pulling, and lifting instructional equipment and supplies, sitting on chairs or floor, leaning over for prolonged periods of time, reaching in all directions, and working outdoors for prolonged periods of time.

    Background Check:

    Successful completion of the hiring process is contingent upon the applicant passing a multi-agency livescan fingerprint/background check and TB test (paid for by MEarth).

Compensation Information

Compensation: $20 per hour depending on relevant professional experience.
